My $0.02

Names is a different thread. Wanted to list priorities. Because if you aren’t clear in priorities, you won’t pick well on names.

I think people are attracted too much to scheme, personally. It would be right if we were where we were when JJ left. But this is a real program rebuild. That’s a different type of cat. We need someone with Saban like hunger to win, and energy and discipline to follow through on that hunger, who will not tolerate bullchit at a team or program level, who can evaluate talent and will go get it, and who can attract a staff.

I’d sacrifice scheme for that. Saban isn’t a scheme guy. This isn’t about a ‘ceo’ type. I’m not saying that at all. Ceo is code for caretaker. Ditka wasn’t a ceo, but he lead and had a very, very innovative defense. Just by way of example.

Scheme is popular today because it has been beyond frustrating to watch incompetent offenses for 17 years. But that isn’t just or much about scheme. Richt would suck at implementing a spread, no doubt.

Spread can take advantage of local athletes, so great, okay, sure. But spread isn’t the fix. Discipline, commitment, seriousness, effort, recruiting, evaluations, and drive to win. That is required.

Coker was a caretaker. Shannon unprepared entirely. Golden wanted out. Richt was retired. None were seriously committed to doing what it takes.

I like this guy..

Rex Ryan is the guy.... elite at defense..especially with the south Florida athlete... bring in a good to decent OC/recruiter like a James Coley and were back.... its either him or Butch but the next coach has to have a proven elite ability

One more comment on spread.

Football is competitive. Spread is just a strategy. Strategies wear out when dynamics change. Nothing wrong with spread, but you have to hire a leader and program builder who can attract talent. A scheme person who doesn’t do those things is at best a short term answer and at worst, irrelevant. If we find someone who does what we need and they are a spread innovator, great. But if we take scheme over leadership we will regret it.

I agree with S&C need someone more innovative there

Hire Magnús Ver Magnússon from Iceland. I said this to replace Swasey, still same answer.

Without question, he is the WORLD'S greatest S&C coach.

My guess is he would listen, but probably wouldn't leave his homeland for grueling season or recruiting.

But maybe.....

I’m responding because your post is a great example of Miami fan delusion. It doesn’t even matter if some aspects of your point aren’t 100% wrong. They’re just off base. If you think Miami has a material advantage outwide of proximity to local talent relative to other major programs, you’re delusional.

Private university has some pros and more cons — on balance, it is a disadvantage far more than an advantage. If you don’t understand that, *shrugs*.

To the extent educational quality truly matters to a recruit, which is not the case most of the time, we are not as differentiated as our fans think and at a disadvantage to some programs (e.g., such as Stanford, ND). So most kids don’t care and the ones who do, not clear we’re what they see as quality. Sorry, but that’s reality. Miami alumni have a higher view of Miami’s quality than the rest of the country, and Newsweek doesn’t change that.

Location? To a broke college kid, it ain’t what it may be to a retiree. Facilities, dorms, on-campus stadium, college town, there are a lot of tradeoffs to Coral Gables.

Tradition? 1 title in 30 years, a few NCAA scandals, a bad boy reputation that doesn’t sell very well outside our home base, fans who don’t care, etc. Overrated by everyone who isn’t a fan.

NFL success? Not so much recently. Not much of a sale these days against the schools we are recruiting against for talent.

Honestly, you listed our fans fantasies, not reality.

Laughing my *** off at this. I'm going to guess you didn't actually attend college if you think the educational advantage and location are not significant.

Newsweek and all the other rating systems are STUPID and not really based on the education. I'm an alum. I do not, by any means, have a higher view of Miami's quality than it actually is.

When I graduated with a Bachelor's, most of my colleagues had Master's degrees for the same job. Within three years I was working alongside a ton of Ivy MBA's. And I was just as knowledgeable and prepared to do the work as all of them. Conversely, I also worked with a kid out of Arkansas (nepotism hire) who graduate with a 3.99 GPA and was a complete and utter moron who couldn't hold his own to save his life.

I sure as **** didn't work with people who went to Bama, Ohio State, FSU, etc.

You're on the outside looking in, are clueless, and you're mad about that.

Mmm no, I want someone experienced in training for d1 athletics.

I should have been more clear.

He would make a compelling impression during on campus visits with OL/DL/LBs and their parents.

I don't believe there is prohibition from him appropriately participating in on the trail events (but could be very wrong).

No one in the world brings his resume for S&C.

Right. Sure. Because being a multi-time World's Strongest Man, training several other World Strongest Men winners, and working with top world class Euro soccer clubs and national teams is way easier.

Magnus would sneeze and push over Miami's OL/DL as they **** themselves trying to understand the sign "No Aumingjar" he would hang up at the entrance to the weight room.

Seriously. CFP wouldn't know what happened with the results he could likely achieve.

But, sure, no one call to see if he is interested.

Well like you

Well like you said he probably wouldn't leave if he's already training people and teams like that.

What we need to hire / solve for in a Hc:

1. Talent Acquisition. Very poor score. Unproven at best as a recuiter at UM. Unproven as an evaluator. He may end up being okay at this, but there isn’t much I see in his record to expect he will. He certainly hasn’t demonstrated it.

2. Culture. Unclear. Not a HC. Incomplete I guess. Except since there was no interview process, the AD gets no credit for thinking he’ll get this right.

3. Staff. Low grade. Based on what we’ve seen, no reason to expect he’ll attract greatness. Richt hired Kul (for all his shortcomi)gs, so did Saban). Manny hired Banda and Rumph.

4. Style. High grade. Aggressive, understands the brand.

5. S&C. No idea.

6. Scheme. Okay on D. No idea on O.
Here is how I score Diaz against the traits I called out.

Overall, I have to view this as a very risky hire and an awful hiring process. Maybe he’ll work out. Hopefully for the team. But not what we needed.

I agree with what's bolded.

On points 4 and 6: I see style, but not much substance. It seems put on to me...against good teams he gets crushed mentally and physically. As for scheme, it's great against dysfunctional or inferior offenses; against good offensive schemes or talent, he's been owned.
