Mario first - he is who he is. He's shown us who he is. He recruits well in both HS and Portal, hired name (but washed up) coaches to start but fixed some of that with better hires in Dawson/Hetherman. I think our offseason program and prep is good. Our body types look good and we don't have slow/out of shape guys, for the most part. We have better athletes and recruits than the previous few HC tenures.
*But then gameday hits*. And Mario gets outcoached by so much on gameday, it's not even funny. We thought Butch Davis' gameday gaffes were rough...yeesh. Mario puts him to shame. Wasted timeouts, procedural and dumb penalties, etc...we spend more time in a game beating ourselves and trying to stick to some kind of "identity" than actually just going out there and beating the other team. It's been said by others on here for sure - but it's almost like Mario doesn't want to win unless it's his way and on his terms. His stubbornness will be his eventual downfall (especially when it comes to letting Mirabal call the run game). Whether it's sooner or later, money, politics, and on-field results will tell that tale. Mario's tenure can be saved, but he's going to have to do some things that Golden and Richt wouldn't do - he'll have to swallow his pride and make major concessions/changes on the staff, and give away some of the micromanagement control he feels he needs to have. Otherwise...this will crash and burn sooner than later on its own.
As for Beck...I think things started going sideways for him well before he came to Coral Gables, and even before his injury at UGA. The drops by his WRs at UGA and his INTs by trying to be *the guy* and force throws...he's become rotten between the ears. But he still thinks since he had what success he did at UGA, that he knows better than everybody at Miami. I think Beck came in here thinking "this is the ACC, this is junior league - I did it in the SEC bigtime, and I'm the elite guy here, and everyone else needs to fall in line and they're the problem". I agree with his frustruration w/Brockermeyer for instance, but how he's handling it is terrible. We can see this mentality with all his temper tantrums on the sidelines. He walks around the sidelines alone pretty much, and where we saw Cam have his teammates gravitate towards him and work with him, they've been repelled this year by Beck. His leadership sucks, he thinks he knows it all, but he crumbles at the first sign of adversity when things don't go his way.
Some people have said on here and elsewhere that they think he has dead arm - I think his arm/elbow is fine. From all the hitching and second-guessing his reads, it's all in his head. He's rattled, and I don't know that he'll be able to get the confidence that he needs to be successful back...and even if he does, what happens after the next drop or INT?
Beck is best when he just plays naturally and doesn't think about it too much. Adversity gets him in his head and then he's no better than any other QB.
