For fun discussion and speculation: I would say 4 years of elite offense combined with 1 very good defense, 1 above average defense and 2 mediocre defenses. I guess my question is: Is this a coach who only cares for one side of the ball and neglects the other? or Is it a coach who can scheme lesser athletes to success on offense but suffers from a weak recruiting base on the side of the ball that requires more physical talent?

2009

Offense 36.1 ppg-8th in nation
412 ypg- 33rd in nation

Defense 23.8 ppg-50th in nation
336.3 ypg-35th in nation

2010

Offense 47 ppg- 1st in nation
530.7 ypg- 1st in nation

Defense 18.7 ppg -12th in nation
346 ypg- 34th in nation

2011

Offense 46.1 ppg- 3rd in nation
522.8 ypg-4th in nation

Defense 24.6 ppg-52nd in nation
390.1 ypg-67th in nation

2012

Offense 49.5 ppg- 2nd in nation
537.4 ypg-5th in nation

Defense 21.6 ppg-25th in nation
374.2 ypg-44th in nation

Numbers mean **** when they play a physical squad with a dl they were awful and oregon keot winning without him

Miami lost butch and became str8 ***, thats how much butch meant

With the Miami athletes, he can implement a defense only a few notches above Golden's/Donofrio's and still be decent.

But with that offense scoring 70 points every game, it won't matter much.

They wont score 70 this isnt madden

When the real teams jump off it turns defensive, its every sport. Lol 70 points against the fsus clemson no way, if he cant croot sfla we fked. Miami won five titles with d and the sec won 7 str8 with d fsu won with d osu won with d

With Miami athletes and ranked teams, how did Butch Davis Da Gawd lose to unranked ECU twice?

Um, Miami went 35-3 in the first 3 years w/o Butch. Oregon is 32-7 in the first 3 years w/o Kelly.

Thanks for trying though.

Are you referencing their 26-17 loss to OSU, 22-19 loss to Auburn, 40-27 loss to LSU and 17-14 loss to Stanford? You could argue that OSU, Auburn and LSU were the more talented teams from more fertile recruiting grounds. Stanford recruits the whole nation due to their academic reputation.

I looked, a little less than half (about 40 kids) of their roster from the 2010 national champ game vs Auburn is from Cali, the rest (45 kids or so) is made up of Oregon, Nevada, Washington, Idaho, Hawaii, Utah, Colorado and Texas. Not many great football states there. It would probably be tough to convince the top Cali kids to ignore USC, UCLA, Stanford, Cal and ASU to go to cold, rainy Oregon. This has to factor into a lack of depth and talent on both sides of the ball. How bad would our roster look if half the roster was coming from those states? Would we compete for anything. People crapped themselves when we recruited TE Billy Sanders from Idaho. Imagine half our roster?

People should look at the 2000 roster. Losing to Washington was inexcusable. Everyone *****es about the BCS, but fails to mention how a team with 10 probowlers lost a game to a team who had not a single legit NFL player. Not one.

The best defense I ever saw at Miami, the 1991 team, was lead by a spread offense HC.

Something the numbers don't tell about the defense is that their offense doesn't do their defense any favors.

Sure, the offense will line up and simulate who they'll face in the upcoming week, but the rest of the practice the defense is going against their offense which isn't what the competition will bring. I hope that makes sense.

It's this.

After losing to LSU, he mentioned how they had more horses:

“They got a little bit different athlete running around out there,” he said. “Look at their defensive linemen. Standing next to them, walking off the field, they don’t look like a lot of the guys we see. That’s the common trait.”

That LSU defense had like 10 NFL draftees in the two-deep.

Give Chip south Florida athletes, and he would do work.

Didn't Oregon put 70 on FSU last year?
