Had a chance to chop it up with Monroe Freeling yesterday who is currently at 6'7 295lbs.
Monroe who was first recruited by Cristobal/Mirabal at their time at Oregon, lived in Oregon until moving into Charleston, South Carolina. Coach Mirabal and him went in depth over film for about 2 hours on his official visit back in June and felt why he got the nickname from some as "the mad scientist". He stresses the technique aspect along with just teaching him the basic fundamentals like no other coach he has been around. His first official visit he said was a "very laid back and chill visit".
In his time in high school, Monroe made it known that the brotherhood and comradery specifically on the O-line is something he values and truly enjoys and is already seeing similar things happening with the University of Miami and wants to continue to experience in recruiting aspect. As soon as Mario and staff was formed at Miami, multiple staff members reached out to Monroe including staff members he didn't even know existed and went as far as communicating with multiple family members of his which has made quite the impression. Antonio Tripp current Miami commit has also built a relationship with Freeling dating back January of his freshman year where they played as teammates at an All Star game.
Monroe is aware of the competition that will be at Greentree in the next coming years in the offensive line and although he plays mostly LT he knows Mirabal's teaching of cross training and will continue to work on playing both sides of the line. Some guys that Monroe models his game after is in fact, Penei Sewell and Quinton Nelson. The energy that the staff has shown Monroe along with high energized practice he was able to watch on his OV, is really telling to what the program is evolving to be. Staff has made it clear to him that they indeed do want Freeling in this class and willing to wait on his decision when that day comes.
Monroe still has 2 official visits and wants to get to a Miami game early in the season before announcing a commitment in the Fall. Monroe has expressed that if he does intend to commit to Miami, that the staff is getting the hardest worker and will lift the teammates around him to reach their highest potential. Freeling feels like there is still more to experience at Miami like just being around the team specifically the offensive line and plans on coming to Miami for a third time just has not pinned a date yet.
Monroe is down to 7 final schools with Michigan, Notre Dame, Georgia, Ohio State, Florida, Clemson and the Canes. He wants to find his fit at Miami and understands that some other guys on the board may have to decide before he knows where he stands with the Canes but I would continue to watch this recruitment closely in the next few weeks.
