Missed Tackles

There is obvious room for improvement, if we want to win a championship the margins are razor thin, a missed tackle here and a great tackle by IU on malachi which forced punt deep in our end that ends up blocked is the difference between us coming back from Parade RIGHT NOW..

I swear anytime someone brings up a LEGIT issue people try to sweep away like dont talk bad, same ting happened in portal thread BEFORE the championship game, that room needs work and many of us saw it. We can be better, we are trying to win a Championship

Now here's a "real" reply.

Sure, there's room for improvement on long snapping, punting, kicking (off and FG/XP), blocking on special teams and a lot more. (<--- that is snarky "humor" on my part). There's also room for improvement with our first half offensive game planning and discipline with regard to penalties and mental errors. Those two things I would list as #'s 1 and 2 (not necessarily in that order) as to why we lost the game. Missed tackles are on the list as well, but in my mind there's a massive gap after those first two points. I would also add that IU made way less mistakes than we did.

Because of the massive gap between my first two points and the missed tackle thing, I made the comment I made. And I stand by that comment. I've been watching us suck an egg for 20+ years. We don't suck eggs anymore. We have improved immensely and I'm pumping a little sunshine over here. If you don't want sunshine, no problem, but keep the rainclouds to yourself or put some sun screen on and come on over. Life is short and it's not perfect. Kinda like my ******.

Yeah, not trying to mope. Just highlighting a legit issue, as you said.

Were we better this year? Of course. But the numbers don't lie. We were near the bottom of the FBS in terms of missed tackle rate.

I understand what @JayCane20 is saying, "Our tackling philosophy is blowing up angles, taking shots, and swarming. You miss tackles but force cut backs into the swarm. Or you absolutely level them."

But there's a flip side to that coin. The swarm won't always be there to clean up a whiff.

You can't deny that missed tackles had a genuine impact on our game. Just like the missed tackles Ole Miss had against Malachi Toney on a key third-down conversion, and that one long TD screen.

Considering how physical our practices are compared to Indiana's, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that we should be better at tackling than they are. I just feel something is amiss IMO.

It's obvious we had a problem all year with missed tackles. We had one of the highest missed-tackle rates in the nation.

I know it can be a misleading stat for evaluating overall defense, because our players swarm do a good job of swarming to the ball. For fast, attacking defenses like ours, a missed tackle will slow down an offensive player enough to allow someone else to clean it up.

However, it's still an issue that needs to be fixed. One-on-one tackles have to be made and can't be avoided altogether. Although we were better this year, it seems to be a nagging problem from year to year.

We had 28 missed tackles against Louisville. We had plenty of whiffs vs. Indiana in the championship game. The one that sticks out is the Poyser missed tackle over the middle that would've stopped the receiver way short of the first down. I think it was against Becker.

From what I understand, our practices are very physical with a lot of hitting. A lot more than other programs. Definitely more than Indiana's 90-minute walk-throughs.

So, shouldn't we be better at tackling? Or are we hitting too much in practice, where guys are banged up and playing with a bit of hesitation? Anyone who's played with a shoulder stinger knows how that can affect your ability to wrap up.

Seeing Ponds tackle Fletcher in the box while OJ Frederique shows a pitiful effort on a tackle near the 5-yard line is infuriating. Even the announcers called it out.

Is this a coaching issue or a personnel issue?
We should probably be better, but maybe Hetherman’s approach about swarming acknowledges that college players miss tackles, and the only way to prevent that is to have more than one defender involved in the tackles.

for the record, I was very happy with how UM tackled this season, in particular our CB’s, and the entire DB room. What hit, we don’t just tackle.

I was shocked when I heard that stat because it wasn’t apparent to me all season. Maybe because last year’s defense was bad but short of a handful of plays all season I was pleased with the tackling.

Missed tackles could be a misleading stat especially if half of the missed tackles resulted in slowing down the offensive player who was then immediately swarmed and tackled.

Now there were several key plays in the game where missed tackles were costly. I think Thomas had a poor game IMO (look at Mendoza’s TD run).

Someone didnt watch our defense in prior years.
No ****, we have improved leaps and bounds from the horrific arm tackling display for so many years, and 9f course the optimist level effort last year. Sure we missed some I would like back, but ****…the improvement this year was there

Where are the statistics on missed tackles? Because I have a hard time believing that this was one of the worst tackling teams in the country. It’s impossible to field what was (at worst) a top 5 defense if you can’t tackle.

The ONLY way this makes sense is if whoever was keeping tally of missed tackles was using some kind of weird system. Like a play where we had 5 or 6 guys swarm to the ball and everyone who didn’t get credited with a tackle got credited with a missed tackle. And if that’s the case, the statistic is worthless.

Oh someone's been paying attention today....

I expect diplomatic immuntiy from you next time my (excellent) dad jokes get reported to you by those b!tches!

1. We had a mierda defense in 2024, probably ranked #80 (I made that up, but it's probably close)
2. That crappy defense cost us a playoff birth in 2024
3. Cajun Lance got the boot.
4. Psycopath Corey got hired.
5. Defense balls the F out all year and earns top 10 status.
6. Lose championship game.
7. Complain about missed tackles.
lmfao spot on

This was one of the best tackling teams we have had in a longtime. Missed some in the ****le game which hurt but this team routinely got the ball carrier on the ground

Agreed!!!

Like you said, it’s OK to praise our D and still talk about areas of improvement. We DO need to improve our tackling. It doesn’t mean we don’t love our D and are ecstatic about Heatherman.

Committing too many penalties, and especially at crucial moments, is also something that should and can be fixed with some intentionality. It doesn’t mean I’m not all behind Mario and the team, it just means this is a football chat room and we’re chatting about football.
