Missed Tackles

It's obvious we had a problem all year with missed tackles. We had one of the highest missed-tackle rates in the nation.

I know it can be a misleading stat for evaluating overall defense, because our players swarm do a good job of swarming to the ball. For fast, attacking defenses like ours, a missed tackle will slow down an offensive player enough to allow someone else to clean it up.

However, it's still an issue that needs to be fixed. One-on-one tackles have to be made and can't be avoided altogether. Although we were better this year, it seems to be a nagging problem from year to year.

We had 28 missed tackles against Louisville. We had plenty of whiffs vs. Indiana in the championship game. The one that sticks out is the Poyser missed tackle over the middle that would've stopped the receiver way short of the first down. I think it was against Becker.

From what I understand, our practices are very physical with a lot of hitting. A lot more than other programs. Definitely more than Indiana's 90-minute walk-throughs.

So, shouldn't we be better at tackling? Or are we hitting too much in practice, where guys are banged up and playing with a bit of hesitation? Anyone who's played with a shoulder stinger knows how that can affect your ability to wrap up.

Seeing Ponds tackle Fletcher in the box while OJ Frederique shows a pitiful effort on a tackle near the 5-yard line is infuriating. Even the announcers called it out.

Is this a coaching issue or a personnel issue?

Our tackling philosophy is blowing up angles, taking shots, and swarming. You miss tackles but force cut backs into the swarm. Or you absolutely level them.

Tackling in space head up 1v1 was as good as i've ever seen it at UM

Is what it is.
Ahmmon Richards was sayng this exact thing

Mario is trying to set up a visit to Indianas practice. I guarantee it’s in relation to the shorten, non physical practices of Indiana. Cignetti is about to revolutionize how teams practice… for the better. It clearly works as is evidenced by him only using 13 players on defense all year

Championship game it was less about missed tackles and more guys getting pulled along 3-5 yards trying to rip the ball out. Also I think both Thomas and Wes had shoulder issues going on.

Our defense made incredible improvements but missed tackles was still an issue, those issues just get highlighted and become glaring when matched up against a team like IU who seem to not miss a single tackle at all.. I think it begins with LB play and those guys were getting guys on ground..

Compare Ponds running up and getting Fletcher on ground with ease compared to #24 just missing guys in open field for first downs.. We had not only open access throws completed with ease but then first guy there would not get it on ground.

There are still major things we can do to improve on defense next year. We tried to cover missed tackles with swarming to ball but hopefully that improves and I also hope our zone coverage improves a ton.. Too many busted coverages and also guys covering grass and a wr right next to them open, again this was glaring after watching a defense like IU and how they closed zone windows and passed routes with awareness.. Hopefully 2nd year in scheme allows for better coverage. We do that and we can be #1 in nation.

I saw that several times throughout the game. There was a play that was initially called a TD that got brought back to about the 5-6 yard line. The replay showed our guy (don't remembe who) literally going at the ball rather than tackling the dude for like 5-10 yards. In the tacklers defense, I believe he thought our other dude was gonna bring the ball carrier down, but it highlights the point you made.

Our defense was top 5/top 10 this year. Last year it cost us a playoff spot. Let's complain about missed tackles!!!!
There is obvious room for improvement, if we want to win a championship the margins are razor thin, a missed tackle here and a great tackle by IU on malachi which forced punt deep in our end that ends up blocked is the difference between us coming back from Parade RIGHT NOW..

I swear anytime someone brings up a LEGIT issue people try to sweep away like dont talk bad, same ting happened in portal thread BEFORE the championship game, that room needs work and many of us saw it. We can be better, we are trying to win a Championship

Can you put this into a numbered list please?
Oh someone's been paying attention today....

I expect diplomatic immuntiy from you next time my (excellent) dad jokes get reported to you by those b!tches!

1. We had a mierda defense in 2024, probably ranked #80 (I made that up, but it's probably close)
2. That crappy defense cost us a playoff birth in 2024
3. Cajun Lance got the boot.
4. Psycopath Corey got hired.
5. Defense balls the F out all year and earns top 10 status.
6. Lose championship game.
7. Complain about missed tackles.

There is no way we had more missed tackles this year than we did in the previous 3-4 years. What metrics are they using this year to determine that?

I thought our worst tackling game was Virginia Tech. I didn't even think Louisville was that bad, although we missed some tackles in key situations. Missed tackles will happen every game, no matter how good the defense is. Our tackling in the game against UF was one of the best I've ever seen. Maybe my eyes were deceiving me all year.
