Mike Rumph note

The race card is BS in Miami. You can’t be racist in Miami and survive a week. I’m a huge fan of making fun of stereotypes...starting with myself. It’s fun to mess with each other to keep it real and weed out the pussies. True racism or bigotry that’s hatred is a whole other game. The diversity we have down here is a big part that makes us great. Whether it’s Reed, Berrios, or Dorsey throwing up the U it’s the SWAG that sets us apart.

Now about the thread. Rumph is a ***** when it comes to recruiting. He even cries like one on Twitter for the whole world to see firsthand. Rumph was a product of the system as a player. He would’ve never been drafted as high as he was if it wasn’t for the players before him and around him. He has been extremely fortunate for his talent level as a player and a coach. His luck has run out and he’s being exposed. Let’s move on already.

You're not seeing recruiting correctly. You're letting all the background noise (bags) cloud the picture.

Nothing has really changed in the recruiting landscape. We never got all the "elites" (that today would be five stars) even in the 80's and 90s. And some of the elites we did get were notable flops. Where JJ and Butch excelled was being spot on evaluating the large pool of 3* and low 4* in SFL. And equally important, they both had the development staff to coach them up. Just look at JJ's and Butch's coaching tree.

Further, JJ himself stated he recruited for speed and intelligence; they were the two things that can't be coached. And he wasn't talking about just the skill positions, he emphasized speed across the board. OL getting to their blocks quicker, DL with a quicker first step, LB that can go sideline to sideline or cover a RB in the flats. As far as intelligence he was talking football IQ not book smarts. QBs, LBs, whoever, processing info, making faster reads, reacting faster. That was our MO … and we've forgot about. Now... all anyone talks about is getting a few prancing ponies catching the air mail down field out of the spread.

JJ and Butch were successful despite the same disadvantages against the state schools. Do you really think that Bama is really concerned about UM? They're using the bags to out bid GA, or Clemson, or Auburn. They know we're not in the bag game.

We have to change our strategy and stop chasing dreams. JJ and Butch laid out the pattern, Lock into the large pool of 3* and 4* guys we can sign. (Over the last 15 year there's an annual thread of the 3* or 4* we've overlooked). Coach them up and stop beating ourselves and we'll get our mojo back … then the 5*s will come.

NorthEast-

In the 80s and 90s UM's main recruiting rival in Dade/Broward was FSU. They were both playing the speed game with undersized players. It wasn't until the success of those programs that entire conferences began to set up $hop in SFL. Back then OU and Neb were still running the triple option. The Big10 was 3 yards and a cloud of dust, the SEC was a ground and pound league as well. JJ didn't have those disadvantages because UM ran college football then. JJ was 52-9 in 5 years and played in 3 title games (44-4) his last 4 years at UM. Even Erickson led UM to 2 chips after JJ left for the Cowboys. I agree with you about Davis because he had to deal with the NCAA and the bagmen. He did an incredible job at UM under difficult circumstances. Finally, Howard was the one who really ushered in UM's reliance on speed. JJ put that reliance on steroids.

I'll know this well get neg but the optics of it. 1st Rumph deserves to be fired for missing out the 2 Heritage CB, so if Rumph is fired worthy what the **** has Panda and Patke done to stay other then previous relationship? LB play has been horrible and who's the LB coaches

Agree that LBs looked like ****. But didn’t Patke only have SLBs?

Richt had three black assistants - Duggans, Brown, Rumph.

Diaz probably needs the same also or the black hispanic divide is going to start getting stocked against him, not the least by interests opposed to UM. Not fair, just how it is. Our recruit base is largely AA and that means the identity of our staff matters to an extent.

Pretty easy to accomplish that. Have DB, LB, DL, and the OL spots.

It ain’t even about Rumph.

My favorite Miami asst of all time was WRs coach and legend Hubbard Alexander who coached under Jimmy. Hubbard was black but back in the day I guess color was secondary to your ability to perform. When I was growing up again coaching ability mattered not some identity politics bullshyt this generation thinks deserves entitlement because of skin color or gender.

The politics doesn’t really need to be discussed on a football board. It is what it is. There is zero reason Diaz cant find some good AA coaches to fill out his staff. I have no doubt he will, moreover.

Good. Can't fckin recruit to save his life, I'm tired of having to rely on GT's & Juco's at a crucial Corner spot because he couldn't do a simple job. Dudes like Dean & Delaney had no business playing here.

He's NOT irreplaceable, he's only beloved on this site because he played for the 00-01 Canes.

I know of 2 different DB coaches in HS in South Fla that thought Rumph was a joke, whether yall wanna hear it or not he's not well respected on the scene & gets clowned by a lot of local South fla coaches, which is why he had such a hard time recruiting.

I take what any local HS coach says with a grain of horse ****. Most of them hate on Rumph because he’s on the staff and they aren’t.

And he was a DB coach on the #1 pass D in the country. Not sure how you get any better then that. (shrugs). If people don’t like the guy personally that is fine..but numbers don’t lie.

Cool story from the guy on an Internet message board.

All this Rumph hate but all this praise for Manny. We had the #1 Pass D, Rumph gets no credit but Manny does. Everyone cried that our LBs regressed besides Romeo, who coached them.. Manny(he did not coach Romeo btw). Poster cry that Rumph has landed no one but the Savage Manny has not landed **** in the last 8 years.

Exactly. If he's not well respected on the scene then that says a lot about how stupid SFL coaches are. And I want Rumph gone but he's done a good job developing players. Can't knock that.

He just can't recruit well but I suspect he'll have a far better career then those idiots.

Stop being retarded dude. You've been on this site a while.....We call for ANYONE'S head. I don't care if he's red, yellow, black, white or has polka dots. You can either coach or you can't

I mean hello......WE WERE ALL YELLING FOR DINO BABERS WHO LAST TIME I CHECKED WAS BLACK.

We're looking for a solution to our COACHING PROBLEM. Stop making this about race and let's hope we FINALLY have a competent staff.

Wait, Dino is black? I thought he was Italian.

I'm still ****ed about the Chafie Fields TD in 99 or 2000, forget which year. Rumph can go.

Where did this idea that he is the "teacher" come from?. He was learning on the job. Him and Banda are one in the same..except Banda has more experience and can likely call Manny's defense.

Its a myth that Rumph is some cb coach Mr Miyagi. Even at Heritage there were 3 former nfl defensive backs that coached on his team.
These clowns invented this theory that Rump invented football because they wanted to say something positive about him to combat the glaring historically bad “recruiting” he’s done.
