It doesn’t matter because it doesn’t mean that he knows how to teach or recruit. I’m not taking a guy who never had to teach football to somebody or recruit somebody to play football.

Using your logic Tennessee should hire Peyton Manning to be their new OC.

Why do other coaches do it all the time then? Ohio St did it with mike vrabel. Vanderbilt did it with ken wisenhunt. You act like this is some new concept. It isn't. There are numerous examples of coaches hire former players with zero coaching experience on the college level **** even pro's.

It’s not happening...

I'm cool with it being his system find somone with high quantities of melanin in their skin who is as well.

You tripping boss. I don't career what color the staff is long as they win. How many brotha's were on jimmy Johnson staff? Recruits don't care either long as they win and they become better football players.

F*ck all that white, black, hispanic sh*t. Rumph should be gone off the fact that I've never heard a top recruit cite as rumph the reason for wanting to come or consider Miami. It is always "I want to play for that defense."

Maybe it will maybe it won't but its not a new concept. You're out of the loop with your silly logic.
The only logic here is y’all thinking Miami is going to pick up and hire somebody that quit his last coaching job.

Being honest that was a different time and age. In these days it matters that we are represented in everything that we are apart of.

Rumph was a failure at recruiting but a good position coach. Manny needs to mix and match recruiters plus technicians. Sometimes you get lucky and find a guy good at both (I think Simpson qualifies) but it's rare. Miami can get along with Rumph but must get someone much better at recruiting on staff. Banda is adequate, but he's not Corey Raymond.

You're not seeing recruiting correctly. You're letting all the background noise (bags) cloud the picture.

Nothing has really changed in the recruiting landscape. We never got all the "elites" (that today would be five stars) even in the 80's and 90s. And some of the elites we did get were notable flops. Where JJ and Butch excelled was being spot on evaluating the large pool of 3* and low 4* in SFL. And equally important, they both had the development staff to coach them up. Just look at JJ's and Butch's coaching tree.

Further, JJ himself stated he recruited for speed and intelligence; they were the two things that can't be coached. And he wasn't talking about just the skill positions, he emphasized speed across the board. OL getting to their blocks quicker, DL with a quicker first step, LB that can go sideline to sideline or cover a RB in the flats. As far as intelligence he was talking football IQ not book smarts. QBs, LBs, whoever, processing info, making faster reads, reacting faster. That was our MO … and we've forgot about. Now... all anyone talks about is getting a few prancing ponies catching the air mail down field out of the spread.

JJ and Butch were successful despite the same disadvantages against the state schools. Do you really think that Bama is really concerned about UM? They're using the bags to out bid GA, or Clemson, or Auburn. They know we're not in the bag game.

We have to change our strategy and stop chasing dreams. JJ and Butch laid out the pattern, Lock into the large pool of 3* and 4* guys we can sign. (Over the last 15 year there's an annual thread of the 3* or 4* we've overlooked). Coach them up and stop beating ourselves and we'll get our mojo back … then the 5*s will come.
This is one of the smartest posts I've seen yet.

So much revisionist history by the nincompoops on this board who think JJ and Butch recruited a ton of five stars.

Did not happen. We took the kids that were underappreciated and often not heavily recruited.

Jimmy once said he would rather take a kid who was not the most highly rated but who got better and better every time he stepped on the practice field rather than a highly-rated blue chip who never got better.

We lost a lot of recruiting battles under Jimmy but he developed the kids he got and did it very well.

Although JJ built the program up to where he got his share, even he couldn't totally lock it down. Does Neal Colzie, Reggie Kinlaw, Elvis Peacock, Buster Rhymes, Derrick Thomas ring a bell. Oklahoma, OSU Alabama Notre Dame, etal have been cherry picking Dade and Broward since the early 70s. In fact, thew first national recruit I remember we got that any of the others were after was Lester Williams and a late 70s (Lou Saban). Before then, you'll have to ask somebody else.

East- UM was close to ending its program in the 1970s. UM wasn't even on the map until 79. This thing gained traction when Lou Saban took over. Jim Kelly was the guy who turned this program around. Go back and look at UM's roster from 85-87, even what Saban is doing at UA now can't rival that from a talent standpoint. UM's 86 team was the greatest collection of talent in NCAA history.

My issue isn't going after 5-star kids, my issue was not having a contingency plan if you don't get them. In today's climate, there's a chance you won't get em. UM chased CJ Henderson, Tyson Campbell, and Samuels only to get spurned at the last minute with no contingency plan. I've long said some of these SFL kids use UM to get their bags. UM can hold their own by winning. A Dade County 3-star is the equivalent of a 4-star or better.

Rumph is a good coach. Clearly he and Diaz had some **** to work out. Let's see how he does recruiting when the product he is selling improves as a whole. You all loved Kul, he fell flat on his face recruiting here, now he goes to Alabama and he's everyone's favorite DL coach again. And, before all you Beta males start screaming bags, get the **** out of here.

I'm ok with Manny retaining Rumph and here's why. Rumph is a very good position coach and obviously Manny trusts him with the DB. His recruiting is obviously not where we need it but that's something he could improve on.

Also we just saw Manny fire an entire offensive staff including many people that were close friends so I have no doubt in my mind if Manny felt he needed to replace Rumph then he would

So yall happy with an ALL HISPANIC STAFF?? But 90% black players lol ya'll just gotta learn the hard way there better be some black coaches on the staff either Alum or from the inner city. Or we going to looking at miami sideways.

So far he was smart enuff to keep coach rumph, and they promoted cooney to something, we'll see on the offensive side though, going to be interesting.
