Michigan State finds success with under-the-radar recruits

But home many SFL players do the playoff teams have?

Starting receiver for Michigan State and one of their running backs, starting WR and CB for Alabama and a stud S for Oklahoma. Clemson mostly sticks to Southwest Florida but two of their best players are from there.

and practically every one you mentioned was a highly sought after 4 or 5 Star recruit...

Not really. Ahmad Thomas, MacGarrett Kings, Eddie Jackson and Madre London were all composite 3 stars.

Deon Cain, Ray-Ray Mccloud, Artavis Scoot, Mackenzie Alexander, Jayron Kearse... on Clemson alone, and all were premier 4 and 5star recruits. And they are the BEST players on that team. Development is important, but it will always be about Jims and Joes.

and we went after both Ahmad Thomas and Eddie Jackson. Main reason Eddie Jackson wasn't as sought after is because he had serious grade issues that he turned around his senior year.

Same as the Old Times Cane Program...Our Championship teams never finished in the top ten recruiting...It was due to coaching a player to his maximum ability...Shannon's number 1 recruiting class was an epic bust, but several of them did make it to NFL after less than stellar careers at the "U". Proves the value of quality coaches coaching quality players..

good we didn't get Dalvin Cook, Calvin Ridley, Amari Cooper, Patrick Peterson, Alex Collins, Sony Michel and those other 4&5 star recruits. We are better off with the D'Mauri Jones's and Ryan Mayes of the recruiting pools

Add all the d tackles we missed

I do recall everyone interested in Eddie Jackson. Maybe he didn't have the stars but he was talented and there was not much doubt.

This is Eddie Jackson's older bro.....almost led to a similar fate

Moral of the story, as always: the surest way to a natty is to have a coach who recognizes talent, develops it, and deploys it in such a fashion that he maximizes productivity. There are awlays going to be coaches like Dantonio and Patterson and Briles that win no matter who you give them.

It makes it a LOT easier if you stock your roster with 4 and 5 star guys at the top end, because they have a lower fail rate. Everyone is going to be able to point out guys that busted, but the ODDS of them busting are lower. That's why the majority of the teams in contention every year are the teams with the highest rated classes consistently (Alabama, Oklahoma, FSU, etc.) and the rest of the contenders have STUD coaches.

I personally don't think Richt is on the level of a Patterson or a Dantonio, so he is going to have to recruit highly rated kids better than they do, because he doesn't develop 2 and 3 star guys in to All Americans and high draft picks.

It's all about being coached up in years of playing and coaching. You have to be able to identify what players do best and then get then to utilize that.

I think our position coaches will be HUGE I cannot reiterate that. DC and OC are great they aren't really as much. Specifically talking about hands-on teaching of technique, depth, down and distance. Those are attributes that position coaches teach.

It's why you have guys who are coachable mix with pure athletes who just get! The coordinators put them in the right positions the positions guys develop more so.

One of the key components, consensus attributes of those Spartan killers is mental toughness and competitiveness forged from where they come from. A lot of the kids at MSU are similar to S. Florida kids in that regard. There's not much softness in Flint, Michigan, Youngstown, Lorain, East Side Detroit, etc. The fire in their belly is virtually the same kids from Liberty City or The Muck. The kids that were overlooked by Michigan and Ohio State go there, prepare and play like you stole from them. That's what I want in our players again. Don't get me wrong, we still need guys with tangibles and athleticism, can't just be all ****ed off and grumpy, if that was all it takes my old husky *** would be all ACC.

There's always a debate, but it takes both. Good coaching can make a 2-3 star kid play like a 4-star. Good talent can make a mediocre coach look better than he is. Another thing too is that a lot of the lesser-known kids redshirt and end up being 5th-year seniors who've spent a lot of time in the system, and know the playbook inside and out. They don't make the mistakes that cost games. 16 of MSU's starters this year are RS-seniors, RS-Juniors, or seniors. There are three RS-Sophomores, two sophomores, and one freshman starter is at RB. That's one of the reasons Boise State could compete against teams with better talent. Older kids that play within the system often make a better team than teams with younger, more talented kids, who make mistakes.

Compare that to Alabama's starters. Their kids are more talented, across the board. They only have 10 seniors starting, and none are 5th-year seniors. The rest of the starters are juniors and sophomores, with only two RS-Fr starters, and no true freshman starters, although Ridley has come up big for them this year. It looks like the better recruiting teams get the more talented kids, making up for the lack of maturity and experience, with their talent.

The original title of this thread, before one of the mods edited it, was something along the lines of "for all the star whores..."

The team with the most talent in the country just made their CFB semifinal matchup against Michigan State look like a scrimmage against a JV squad. An elite playmaker from our own backyard (Calvin Ridley) was the best player on the field tonight. They have the best coach and the most loaded roster in America. It's not rocket science.

Our best chance of returning to greatness is to keep elite talent home and land as many premier players from across the country as possible. Star rankings and offer lists aren't everything, but those who continue to believe that a roster's blue-chip ratio doesn't matter in 2016 are stubbornly burying their heads in the sand.
