There's always a debate, but it takes both. Good coaching can make a 2-3 star kid play like a 4-star. Good talent can make a mediocre coach look better than he is. Another thing too is that a lot of the lesser-known kids redshirt and end up being 5th-year seniors who've spent a lot of time in the system, and know the playbook inside and out. They don't make the mistakes that cost games. 16 of MSU's starters this year are RS-seniors, RS-Juniors, or seniors. There are three RS-Sophomores, two sophomores, and one freshman starter is at RB. That's one of the reasons Boise State could compete against teams with better talent. Older kids that play within the system often make a better team than teams with younger, more talented kids, who make mistakes.
Compare that to Alabama's starters. Their kids are more talented, across the board. They only have 10 seniors starting, and none are 5th-year seniors. The rest of the starters are juniors and sophomores, with only two RS-Fr starters, and no true freshman starters, although Ridley has come up big for them this year. It looks like the better recruiting teams get the more talented kids, making up for the lack of maturity and experience, with their talent.
