Miami's pace since 2011

We all know Miami has not played with much pace. But I had no idea how bad it was compared to the rest of the country. Look at our ranks nationally in plays per game since 2011:

2011- 114
2012- 82
2013- 123
2014- 120
2015- 96
2016- 106
2017- 104
2018- 116
2019- 91

For comparison, Lashlee's offense finished 3rd last year.

We have been explosive at times during that period. We finished in the Top 16 three times in yards per play, along with finishes at 29th, 32nd and 37th. But the pace has consistently been bottom of the barrel.

I don't know if this year's offense will be good. But it will definitely be different.
Just out of curiosity, what were the actual number of plays per game D?

Just out of curiosity, what were the actual number of plays per game D?
2011- 114 ranked, 64.5 plays/game, Top Ten ranked teams in category were 79+ plays/game
2012- 82 ranked, 70.1 plays/game, Top Ten ranked teams in category were 83+ plays/game
2013- 123 ranked, 64.0 plays/game, Top Ten ranked teams in category were 82+ plays/game
2014- 120 ranked, 66.2 plays/game, Top Ten ranked teams in category were 82.5+ plays/game
2015- 96 ranked, 69.5 plays/game, Top Ten ranked teams in category were 82.9+ plays/game
2016- 106 ranked, 69.0 plays/game, Top Ten ranked teams in category were 81.6+ plays/game
2017- 104 ranked, 67.0 plays/game, Top Ten ranked teams in category were 79.1+ plays/game
2018- 116 ranked, 66.0 plays/game, Top Ten ranked teams in category were 79.1+ plays/game
2019- 91 ranked, 68.4 plays/game, Top Ten ranked teams in category were 77.7+ plays/game

Some notes:
- Absolutely brutal to search for data and continuously see "Miami (OH)" in better shape
- We weren't only lowly ranked; we were horrendous in percentage away, with some years needing to run 30% more plays to match top ten tempo teams
- If we get into just the top 25, you're looking at a totally different type of offense, though you then have to consider depth
- How Diaz didn't make this his #1 criterion when he first selected an OC still confuses me

I’ve been crying about this **** for ten years. We are smack dab in the middle of the Mecca of speed athletes, yet we insisted on trying to play 1980s Big Ten stall ball and burn clock.

Our offense has always reminded me of how Dean Smith was the only guy who could keep Michael Jordan from scoring.

In typical Miami fashion, we simply cannot get everything synched up at once.

The offenses in the mid 2010s were actually pretty good. 2012-2015 was a pretty good stretch. But of course, we paired that with Mark D’Onofrio, who parlayed the defensive coordinator job at The University of Miami into...*checks notes*.....a volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club of Kendall. It’s literally impossible to be that bad. But we did it.

Then we hire Manny Diaz, who immediately makes Miami at worst pretty good on defense, and we paired him with a Mark Richt offense. Who hadn’t called plays in 15 years and hired his kid Fredo to coach the most important position in sports.

Maybe, just ******* MAYBE, we can pair an above average defense with an above average offense for ONE god**** season.

Different will be good by default for me. Sick of the same old ****. Even if we fail again it'll be in a new, enticing way.

Everything about how our program has been run has been a faceplant. All of it.

Thanks @LuCane! Unbelievable when the numbers slap you up side the head. Being a stats geek, I have to agree about why Diaz didn’t seem to make this one of his top priorities. Could it be he believed Enos would improve the plays per game or was it a complete oversight.

I'd be satisfied with just an average Offense tbh. 30-31PPG. If we can play complimentary football we can be a 10 win team.
I feel you bro, we all are still going thru pro style bro detox.. That **** doesnt even move the needle in reality.. with our schedule thats 70 against wagner but struggling against fsu or somebody. What you want is 40+ ppg.. Lashlee/king is trying to ******* short circuit hardrock scoreboards, believe that

This is exactly why i kept telling people who were foolish enuff to blame coach kehoe that it wasnt his fault. Also keep in mind, those who still believe just because coach diaz is now going to a spread, that has nothing to do with why we been losing games. We havent been playing close to UM style defense since coach shanmon left and until coach richt got here. Pro-style offense can still get it done, the problem has simply been cycling to many inept coaches thru the ranks for the last 19years. Hearing coach diaz say "this up-tempo offense has changed the program" he's putting a lot of stock into rhett lashlee, and once agsin its a "putting the cart before the horse" type statement. Coach diaz, i thought i told you to STFU, seems like you just cant help yourself!

"Pace" and plays per game are two different things.
If you snap the ball every 14 seconds and go 3 and out half the time your plays per game will still be down.

Your point is well taken though.
There is no questioning how anemic and plodding this offense was in '19.

Every time Richt had the offense go into a hurry up, it was effective. The pace alone stresses a defense and doesn't allow them to communicate, so the concept makes sense. Simplifying the offense will help as well. Normally you can't say an offense couldn't get any worse, but in this case, you can. Having a QB like King, who's run a similar system should make a big difference. Last year I was hoping the new offense would work and the QB's were unknown. This year, proven system, proven QB, and it takes a lot of pressure off the OL, the worst unit on the team last year. I think it will actually look better in this offense, because of the emphasis on getting the ball out as fast as possible and King is so mobile.

exactly what i was thinking with the golden teams. defense in those years were on the field handing out 10+ play drives like halloween candy.

****n inexcusable in this era of football when you know pace wears out defenses and can make up for some deficiencies on offense. What a joke!

i look at it this way. the offense has the ball and must make the first move. that is an advantage that cannot be understated. it is like a street fight and one person has the right to throw the first punch and then continually throw punches.
