****Miami vs. Stetson GAME THREAD****

Who are our top three perimeter marksmen? Right now, I'd say:

1. Malovec
2. Washington
3. Dante Allen

Malovec has the best 3 point stroke but can he get his shot against top competition? HIs handle is questionable and he's strictly a spot and shoot guy at this point.

Washington looks fine. Doesn't particularly look for the perimeter shot though. May need to become more of a higher volume outside shooter than we've seen thus far.

I include Allen mainly because he shows a lot of confidence in taking longer-range shots. Looks like enough will fall to include him in this top three.

Do I wish Lucas could have found a proven outside sharpshooter to take, yes. But that's a moot point now.

Why do I care about 3 point shooting? Today's game -- college and pro -- demands it. There are plenty of teams full of shooters who can rain threes on you. Gotta be able to counter and not just have to trade threes for two point baskets. Vital to being able to play from behind as well.

This is absolutely true but the biggest counter to this is: size, physicality, and most important the want to compete on both sides of the floor but specifically defensively.

Through 3 games foul trouble scares me more so than a team shooting the air out of the ball against us

How old is Altuntas? I know he is a freshman, but he looks like he’s 28. And can we please get him on propecia? No one should be bald before graduating from college,
I mighta guessed 38.

The "foreign" guys have a lot to adjust to. In addition to the basketball and school, a whole new country/culture. Hopefully, one or more will settle in and contribute (in addition to Malovec, who already is).

Tre Donaldson will NOT start versus Stetson today, dealing with a minor injury. Could still play.
Then he goes out and plays the most minutes of any player? Doesn't seem like an injury situation at all.

His absence at the start really highlighted his value, though. For sure.

Need Altuntas desperately to figure it out. Otherwise any game Udeh is in foul trouble we are screwed

Need for him to at least be a solid "physical presence" (defense and rebounding) down low when he gets minutes. His offensive game looks very raw: Not expecting much of anything there, especially early-on.

Agreed on the foul trouble. That’s the one downside to playing so aggressive defensively.

We do have more size/depth down low than our 2023 Final Four team did. Our "big man" Norchad Omier was only 6'6 with his shoes on.
We definitely have more size. Not sure about frontcourt depth though, especially if Altunas can't get it together. Perhaps we could slide Henderson to the 4 in certain rotations depending on matchups.

Henderson looks/plays like a classic (not Stretch) 4 already. What do you mean by "slide?"

I don't know how good this team will ultimately be, but I feel confident that they will compete and be entertaining to watch. That's a significant change from last year, when you had guys straight up quit on the program, which is the reason L walked away. These young guys are HUNGRY, and that shows on the court.

Florida will be a good early season test. I don't expect to win it, but I expect this team to compete for 40 minutes. If this team can do that, and then continue to build through OOC play, we might have something.

I’m here to eat some BIG TIME crow. I was skeptical of the ability of a first time head coach to put a polished product on the floor in the first season.

Yes… we’ve played nobody, but we’ve looked like a blue blood against our last two nobody’s. We’re playing the game that Kenpom rewards.

Gotta give Lucas serious credit… the team is playing with purpose and cohesion. They look well coached.

It is impressive.

Disclaimer: NONE of this is to say that we should expect a win against Florida. That would be insane and amazing. Just keeping the game close would be a success.

Im curious as to why you think this? What do you see in their games to say that?
I don't think Reneau is as physical as Henderson is inside. Body type, and style of play.

Also, while neither has great shooting range, I think Reneau has more.

As I said. I don't think the distinction is of much importance. You can call them both Small Forwards.

Pretty positive beginning as you've outlined! Not used to our defending with purpose.

Even if we get beaten handily by UF, I'm liking what I see so far. A lot!
