Miami starting the Heisman advertising

Mali will more than likely have all the highlights and the greater chance.

Mensah will need moments like a last minute drive in order to stand out despite the stats.

Both already get ignored by most of the media.

If Smith doesn't fall off because of a new QB, I feel like Mali needs to do someone beyond pass catching against Notre Dame, like return a punt.

I don't actually want this to happen because I feel like plays like this often backfire for players trying to win the Heisman (Dorsey in 2002 against VT)...BUT...if Mali were to throw a TD pass against Notre Dame, that would probably seal it for him.
If Smith's stats don't fall off with Pippin Took throwing him the ball he deserves the Heisman.

(or)

If we beat ND in South Bend and are 13-0 going into playoffs and Ohio State stumbles again (very possible with a QB who ain't ready) ...

Also, Mensah is a terrific QB for sure, but Mali is 1-of-1.

NFL superstars like Michael Irvin and Reggie Wayne -- who would know -- are calling MT1 the best receiver in school history. Hard to ignore testimony like that.

It just seems like it's gonna be Mali vs. JJ when it comes down to it
Michael Irvin said he's the best WR he's ever seen. Anywhere.

In the end it’s unlikely they’re going to actually split votes. Mali is absolutely Heisman caliber and deserving consideration, but the moment he has a quiet game, his odds shrink. Mali can have an “off” game or two, while Mensah still has a good night statistically, but the opposite is less likely to occur.

In the end it’s going to come down to the Notre Dame game.

My prediction is that if we win it, Darian Mensah will win the Heisman trophy.
Tell that to Ken Dorsey and Willis McGahee. I have lived through this situation once already my boy.

Valid, although that was a little different because a QB and RB don't overlap in stats -- they directly take away yardage from each other. Dorsey and McGahee both had Heisman-worthy seasons, but neither had truly eye-popping numbers because there were only so many yards to go around. (I think McGahee had the better Heisman stat line of the two, but with so many stars around him, it was hard to create a narrative that the running game was THE reason the team was so good.)

With Mensah and Toney, both will have eye-popping numbers, and as a duo they are unquestionably the engine behind the team's success. They might end up splitting the vote, but I have a feeling the narrative will start to coalesce around one or the other based on big plays in the Notre Dame game and/or ACC championship.

I think against Notre Dame would be helpful....but it doesn't have to be against them. If he throws a TD or two before the voting...then I think he can cement himself. A punt return for a TD would be the nail in the coffin. Jeremiah Smith can't add any of those to his resume.

I think where Mali takes it away from Mensah is mixing in his runs, returns, and even passes. Both are well deserving, but I think that is what finally separates them. My $.02.

He had a very good year though. And beat the defending champion on a huge stage with a Heisman highlight moment.

Crouch?

He also threw 10 picks and only 7 TDs for the season, iirc.

Real Heisman numbers there. Yeah, he ran the option. Whatever. Still a complete joke.
