Why can’t we compare rankings between then and now?Unfortunately it’s **** near impossible to compare rankings from then till now
I’d just go out on a huge limb and say we were a lot better then
247 has our composite ranking as #1 as a team in 1999 fwiw and it stays very good up until about 2005-2006
Which makes a lot of sense
Sure there is a lot more coverage today, it’s easier for film of recruits to be sent and there are more so called experts.
However, there was no transfer portal and only one signing date, so recruiting day actually got more attention then, than today. The national rankings were done by ESPN and USAToday and a few others, unlike the web based sites like 247, Scout and Rivals that would come later.
Everyone knew who the top rated players were in Florida back then. It wasn’t the Stone Age and unfortunately between 1995 and 1999, UF and FSU were eating our lunch for instate talent because of probation and the national perception that UM’s time had passed.
I saw that google hit for 247 showing a composite of #1. It’s an error. Also shows Mario Cristobal as the HC. There was no 247 in 1999 and we were most certainly not ranked as having the #1 or even a top 10 class in 1999.
1993 was the last time we were ranked in the Top 10 in recruiting classes until 2001.
1999 Florida High School recruits by UM:
Clinton Portis was a 4 star.
Jason Geathers
Weaver Brothers
Vernon Carey
Andre Johnson
Julian Battle
Larry Anderson
Kevin Beard
Talib Humphrey
Maurice Sikes
Marquis Johnson
Courtney Young
Philip Buchanon
Antwain Joyce
James Sikora
From the 1999 Florida recruits, the only players that had significant playing time in 2000 were Portis, who was James Jackson’s backup, Buchanon who played nickel iirc on passing downs and I believe Vernon Carey played some in rotation.
Butch Davis built those 2000 and 2001 teams out of diamonds in the rough. Heck, Dan Morgan, the best LB on the 2000 team was recruited as a FB and Santana Moss recruited on a track scholarship.
My point and the 1999 class shows, even Davis had some whiffs, but he made up for it by hitting home runs with 3 and 4 stars that UF and FSU overlooked.
