Miami men’s basketball fourth-year guard Tru Washington has entered his name into the transfer portal as of Saturday morning, his father confirmed to CanesInSight.

Washington started in the majority of the Hurricanes’ games this season, though he was briefly benched midway through the year. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard averaged 11.9 points and 1.8 assists in 27.5 minutes per game, primarily coming off the bench. He shot 44.3 percent from the field and 35.2 percent from three-point range.



He will now be seeking his third collegiate program.

Personally, I hope Tru stays but entering the portal is the way to go to see what's your other options are.
I thought Tru excelled in the 6th man role and was looking for him to be the best 6th man in the nation in 2026-27.
However, he might want something more and I respect that.
I am sure the coaching staff will have a good player fill that scholarship one way or another.
If it's Tru then great, if it's another player then I am fine with it.
One day, we will find the formula that will keep your roster intact from one season to the next.
I guess coaches really do have to recruit their own players every year.

I would have loved it if Tru would have come back, but I also understand that he wants to be a starter and Coach Lucas wasn't going to guarantee that. Washington is a **** good role player, I don't know if he he's a difference maker as a starter. His offensive game just isn't good enough, and at this point of his career, I don't think it's going to get significantly better. He's a good on ball defender, he's the kind of guy that programs like Houston and Purdue have on their bench, guys that come in and play heavy minutes.

I think that if Tru is serious about being a full time starter, he may have to go to a team that isn't slated to be in the postseason, because I don't see him as a full time starter on a legit contender, or a very good tournament team. Coach Lucas wants to build a roster that can possibly make the second weekend of the 2027 NCAA Tournament, and in order to do that, you need to have a starter better than Tru Washington.

I hate this system. But this is what people wanted for decades. Pay the kids we all said. Well now what we have is worse. Kid wants to leave, that is his right, but its also my right to not wish him the best.

Paying the players is not the issue.

Its the immediate unlimited transfers.

I don't think so since there was a coaching change. Back then that was the only exception.

 

Whatever rules are implemented on the players, should be the same for the coaches. It would be unfair to cap their transfers when a coach can leave as many times as they want or whenever they want. The best way to manage it is through contractual buy-outs like HC's get or over sea's soccer players have. That's a long discussion for another day.
