Miami QB evals- more lucky or good

I have no idea if any of this is true but a lot of people on this board claim with certainty that our top portal choices the last two years were Mateer and Leavitt.

If that’s true then we’re just plain lucky. Because there’s no chance we’re a playoff team with either one of them. And all this talk about 1-0 would be ridiculed. In fact we’d probably be screaming for Mario’s head. But then again two of the greatest NFL dynasties were a product of lucky picks at QB. Brady and Montana.

The reason I don’t believe we were as interested as people claim is that Dawson has said repeatedly that of the 10 most important traits he needs from a quarterback that accuracy is 1-10.
 
It was crazy luck to get them all. But what we did with/for them, our coaches will never get the full credit they deserve.

Mario creates a **** of an environment of support for these guys. Emotionally & mentally he props our qbs up, which sets the tone for the rest of the team to follow suit. Dawson does what he can to make them comfortable from a schematic standpoint & gives them grace to change things if/when they need to.

Getting the right guy isn't just about the name on the back of the jersey, it's about who we ask & help them to be: leaders. We foster an environment where they can come in & be the man & take control with all the support they need to do so.

So if we got Leavitt or Mateer I have no doubts we could've put them in the best position to succeed.
 
The thing about portal shopping at QB vs high school QB recruiting is that the there are way fewer options available. We were interested in Mateer and Leavitt because they were seen as the best options available at the time and we lucked out that both passed and we got better options in Beck and Mensah. I do think they deserve credit for correctly evaluating Carson Beck, they got clowned on a lot for that take and they ended up being correct
 
We also had Ty Simpson at the top of the board and had to convince Mensah to enter the portal w/ Coop in the 1st place. If Mensah was already in the portal then they never pursue Simpson

We’re operating on a condensed timeline with extreme amounts of desperation so i wouldn’t look into it as much

We’ve also gone after Maiava yet he ended up at USC. Went after Walker Howard on a parallel track from Cam. **** we were even offering Jalen Milrroe money to hit the portal.

Thought Mateer was decent enough back then but was never a fan of Leavitt erratic scattershot run around and chuck it style, didnt seem like fit and the way he left team didnt seem like fit but portal is speed dating..

I would assume with more and more teams/GMs jumping on portal bandwagon it will only get more interesting.
 
The main thing is who is on your roster. Do you have a stud QB? Try winning with Miami's QB's over the last 20 years. Mario knew the missing piece was a really good D1 QB. So you use the portal to fill in any holes you have. Look back at the names of the guys Miami trotted at QB. Pretty sad list.
 
Real life football is not the same as EA Sports football. For the love of God, please read that again OP.

Mateer’s results at OU don’t automatically repeat if at Miami. Same for Leavitt. What if Cam and Beck went to LSU under Lane or OU with Venables? They put up the same results? No. Might be close. Might be better. Might be worse. Life is not a video game.
 
It’s a multitude of things that let us from getting these guys who haven’t planned out, including luck. Other schools were willing to break the bank and bet their future on these guys. Mario wasn’t. At the end of the day that’s what it was.

I totally agree. Those two guys here would have been coached up more and probably succeeded but I'm glad we got who we got each time.

I don't think we'll ever know where they ranked them. As posters above e.g. @cookies mentioned, we're probably calling everyone that's available and feeling them out. The staff doesn't control what stories leak to the press.

To hit back to back to back home runs clearly isn't luck.

We just had our Clemson type moment where they did Tahj Boyd, Watson, Lawrence.

Only difference is our guys have been one year guys. I do hope we can get an elite QB for 2-3 seasons that would get top dawg WR recruits to want to play here
 
Fair amount of good fortune.

However, Clayton Tune was an under 60% completion % QB before Dawson was his play caller. 67%+ after. So was Anthony Brown, who threw the ball much more accurately his one season as Oregon's starter.

Dawson molds passing concepts around the QBs in his system; we run several plays from Duke's offense that Mensah is familiar with.

Both can run and having that +1 threat within our offense would make us more dangerous.

Measah is a fantastic fit, but that doesn't mean we wouldn't have been successful with other guys.

Doesn't matter who the targets are and what order they're ranked. It only matters as to the decision that was made. I remember all the reports about Mateer, but he was pretty much going to OU with his OC. Maybe that one was luck for us or maybe we didn't want him cause we threw more money at Beck than was rumored Mateer got at OU.

Beck was a great get and at good value. I thought he was waaaaaaaay better than he will ever get credit for here. Great eval and get by staff

As for this year and Leavitt. If we believe reports we had him in, we didn't like what he was surrounded by (that stuff does matter and Mario is good at passing on players if they have baggage) and we went after another option. I would say that is a very good eval. Sam Leavitt was playing off his ASU playoff run more than anything. That forced us to go big and we did, and we are now again one of the 6-7 teams who can win it.

I'll give it to Bro coach who keeps winning me over as i think his management of game and things has grown....he keeps us in contention and isn't afraid to go and make some power moves. The Mensah move with Spiderman was a complete BAWSE MOVE. Like legit is the off season move of the year in college football
