Miami needs a new annual rival

We need an opponent(s) for the next four years and that’s about it as far as the near term. Literally only one game open on our schedule.

After that, all the TV deals will be ending and we’ll see how realignment, expansion, legislation, etc has affected the sport. Doesn’t make sense to plan many, or any, more matchups for the 2030s rn. We already cancelled the home&home with USCe.

In the wish fulfillment-zone, I wish UF would play us at least a few times each decade, since we know every year is off the table for them. Additionally, UCF, Penn State, and Nebraska are all teams I’d wanna play more often.

Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Alabama to a lesser extent as well. USC or UCLA could be strategically advantageous.

Schools aren’t going to annually play 11 or 12 P4 opponents unless they are forced to. IMO the sport will eventually require 11 outta 12 P4 opponents because it’s one the easier ways to raise revenue that isn’t being taken advantage of atm.
I thought we cancelled the Auburn home/home but I could be mistaken. I mentioned in another thread how dropping FCS games could open up another opportunity for an intriguing matchup but there’s no sign those games are going away anytime soon. I’ve always been adamant about axing them. They don’t benefit us as much as people think they do and it’s a safety concern for the vastly outmatched FCS opponents. It doesn’t even feel like FAMU or Bethune show up for our game and it looks like we’re going at scrimmage speed to avoid potentially injuring their players. If I remember correctly, there was a play in 2026 where Bain had a clear shot at the BCU QB but purposely took him down easier than he could. Maybe I’m wrong. That’s just what it looked like to me.

As of now, we have not. Dan Rad told the Athletic that the plan was to keep it on the schedule when we cancelled our series with South Carolina last October. We don’t play Notre Dame the years we have Auburn on the schedule (‘29 +’30) so I suspect it’ll stay on there as it’s a bridge to the remaining contracted ND games (2031, 2032, 2034 & 2037).

Agree with on the unnecessary nature of cupcake games. Let those superteam FCS schools prove it against non-p4 d1 teams then they can move up after the fact. Going at half-speed is one of many problems that results from such an imbalanced matchup. I really don’t get who these mercilessness games are for atp.

For monetary reasons, i suspect they will go away after the next TV deal and an expansion of the playoffs; not just for us, but I imagine for all of the p4 schools. They are just leaving so much money on the table year-round by maintaining their inclusion. We beat Stanford and USF by similar margins as we beat Bethune Cookman.

After going from 8 to 9 in-conference games, we’re basically, with a handful of exceptions, at a universal 10 P4 games outta 12 total games model right now which is awesome. A larger playoff, IMO, will lead to schools easing their risk-averse scheduling and we could see a return of rivalries such as TTech vs UTAustin, OU vs OKState, and more off-color matchups like we had planned with South Carolina or neutral one—offs like playing Utah in Vegas.

Doubt it’ll ever get to 12 outta 12 but I’ll gladly take 11 outta 12 with the 1 exception being USF, Troy, Tulane, etc — whichever of the more respectable non-FCS, non-P4 schools. Coaches are just extra-shy to play their backups even in blowout games, against in-conference foes, for whatever reason. Against a known weak af FCS opponent, they are more willing to pull their starters early.

Miami (OH)

Yes, right now.

However, they are a big state school with lots of money.

They've spent a ton of money on terrible coaches. This is also true.

They are clearly punting on this year. My assumption is they're saving up to make a huge splash as soon as they're able to fire Mike.

Hey, I hope they suck forever. I'm sure our rivals said the same thing about us the past 20 years. All it takes is investment and the right hire...
We'll see..i'd say the difference is even in our sanction years we were never this bad/hopeless. & u may be right but their problems go wayy further then just getting a new "Splashy" coach.. gonna need a complete structural rebuild and approach to football if they are going to compete for natties consisntently again..

I would prefer this to be south of I-10 or an indoor stadium please. Anything below 70 degrees ain’t football weather to me.

They aren't as wealthy as you think. If FSU had it like that, Mike wouldn't be there. He would have been fired after 2-10. FSU is lagging behind in NIL and other areas. Miami's issues were that 1) We weren't allowed to spend on talent acquisition the same way SEC schools could(Thanks NCAA) and 2) the powers that be refused to acknowledge that the arms race was changing collegiate athletics, which put us behind the curve. Combine that with three godawful hires(Coker, Shannon and Diaz) and two mid hires(Past his prime Richt and an Al Golden that wasn't ready for primetime, and a terrible cultural fit) and you get two decades of mediocre football.

FSU is broke AND making terrible hires. Willie and Mike were mid hires, and they gave Mike a huge extension when in reality, they didn't have to.

Va Tech is more of a rival than most schools......

I think i should be Syracuse i HATE them in football n have since i watched Mcnabb carve us up as a kid...

Yeah, Syracuse was a real pain in our . . . nether region. For years!

I got no use for Notre Dame, Texas, or Ohio State.

They could all blow their nether-region O-rings tomorrow - and I'd just grin in satisfaction at the glowing turn of events.

FSU does have the second most bricks in the world in a continuous structure. That's something. And that's where the $ is. Like money in the banana stand on arrested dev.

The problem is the Big 10 and SEC are basically not going to play any OOC games anymore. We are stuck with Clemson and NC State and UNC and FSU.

i've advocated that miami/Nd should be annual rivals on "rivalry weekend"... both teams need a marquee game to finish the season and this game would definitely be a top 5 game and maybe top 2 or 3 with the way both programs are trending.. Mich/OSU would be tough to beat initially but we could easily pass up Bama/Auburn because of our national draw...

even if we end up in the B1G, our annual end of season rivalry game with ND would supercede any other game B1G would want us to play... they'd be ok with the every other year broadcasting rights becuase of how big it would be instead of a weak conference game against an irrelevant opponent...

my only hesitation is playing in south bend indiana at the end of November every year... would hate that...
I don’t believe in the cold weather boogieman this fan base seems to be afraid of because it simply doesn’t exist and never really has. For every game we might have lost in the cold, we’ve probably won twice as many. We’ve gone up to freezing Pitt in November multiple times and kicked their *** as well as BC. So I ask, who is the cold weather boogieman and who made him up?

Not so much a boogeyman for the players..moreso for the fans would hate going up there 😂

I feel like they’re 2-3 years away from that right now
As much as it pains me to say this, I agree. Last year was a perfect example. We were far away the better team but still goofed around and let it be a close game. The rivalry is just there and guys play at a completely different level one team blowing out the other is an outlier.

I would love to have a neutral site game (in Dallas or somewhere else) annually with someone like USC. I was always a fan of the Kickoff Classic and got excited to play against a program we otherwise wouldn't play often.

Rivalry’s have ups and downs. FSU beat Miami 7 consecutive years. Miami beat FSU 5 consecutive times at the turn of the century with 2 wins in the same year (Orange Bowl).

Look how lopsided the Bama/Auburn is.

Truthfully there will be new rivalries formed if/when Miami makes it into the B1G. Right now FSU may be headed to the SEC so that rivalry is at risk of being lost.
