Miami Hurricanes Roster Composition - Updated to 12/18/21

Quentin Williams, Cam Williams and El Gammal are gone. So new starting count is 5. I also expect the two PWOs on your list that got scholarships won't get them renewed. That makes 7. And I count at least 4-5 guys I don't expect back. Blue Chip ration is definitely going up from attrition.

I'd be shocked if Mario doesn't have 12 scholarships more to give out without much pain. My guess is it will be closer to 15 by the time summer rolls around, and he'll have a couple portal kids in his back pocket waiting to join.

There are probably 10 -12 guys who I don’t expect to be back.

I thing we sign a class of about 20

Factoring in our ten recent signings (including the Lichtensein transfer) as well as departing players, I currently show the Miami Hurricanes with 82 scholarship players:

For outgoing players, I presently have eighteen players as having played their final games at Miami this season.

Of blue chip composition of the current roster, the Hurricanes now rise to 57%. This is higher than last season (albeit with a smaller roster), and the best that it has been since at least 2006 or earlier. For comparison, the low-water mark for Miami was 26% in 2012. As recently as 2017, the blue chip ratio was at 35%.

Of these blue chip players, almost half (49%) are first or second year players. I am not counting transfers in this equation.

Why does this matter? Well, all season we kept hearing about the young freshmen who were playing. Maintaining a healthy dispersal of talent across all four classes is key to a balanced program. We have had situations in the past where that ratio was out of skew - most notably in 2011 when only 27% of Miami's thirty blue chip players were in their first and second years. That puts the coach in the position where they absolutely have to nail a Top 10 class just to keep their overall blue chip ratio healthy. Any hiccup and the overall roster strength will fall, as it did the following year when Miami dropped to just 21 blue chip players despite the fact that Golden had landed nine four or five star players that year.

While the 2022 class remains incomplete, here is where we stand compared to previous years:

It's interesting to note that since Mark Richt arrived in 2016 only two players failed to qualify or left before their first season began. Prior to that, Miami averaged at least one between 2008 and 2014. Three years (2010, 2011, and 2013) we had three players that signed who never played a down.

Finally, we come to overall roster composition:

Although safeties and corners are grouped together here, we remain low in the latter.
Good stuff

I was wondering about the PWOs…would it be damaging to team morale to pull them? Usually these guys get them because of exceeding play in practice. I get the bottom line and needing to free up scholarships, but I question just pulling them.

Scholarships are year to year and most walk-ins do not keep them for multiple years if they aren’t playing.

I appreciate the work, but Miami has no issues with numbers and will sign as many as Mario wants to sign this year.

The roster is in solid shape, but there are areas that need fortifying and Mario already has a plan. He’s even voicing it publicly, in reality.

we have 10-15 spots open maybe 17 depending on how things shape up from now until the Spring Game. but we aint taking any buttercups or huge projects so I doubt we fill up all the open spots.

Where is this from because there are players who haven't left the team yet but are not on this list. Nesta? Hedley? You sure op is off 'quite a bit' when your image is missing current starters?

Just noticed this picture is still listing El Gammal, who others said had left the team, and does not have Parrot, who as far as I know is still on the roster.

I'm no roster aficionado, just thought it was weird Ivey is on the list but no Hedley or Nesta?

I removed silvera, frierson, and ivey from mine because they all chose to participate in senior day which I assumed meant they are moving on. Also removed Hedley but now seeing his recent Instagram post who knows (he was probably just joking around though)

Also noticed this list doesn't include jarius howard and jared Griffith who were on that 247 scholarship page that someone posted the link too. Never knew they were on scholarship...can someone confirm. Would really like to have those 2 scholarships open lol

Lance is correct. Mario will take as many as he needs to reconstruct the roster he needs. And he can take up to 30 including 7 portal kids with the new rules as long as he makes room. I doubt he takes that many. But I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if he took 18 high schoolers and another 7-8 portal kids.

Regarding PWOs, I get the sentimentality around PWOs deserving to keep scholarships. But in no way would any good coach consider that a blocker to taking in talent needed to win games. Sure, get rid of any rotten cultural issues among recruited players first. But Parrot and Clay James don't get to feel sorry for themselves and no one should feel sorry for them if they lose their scholarships for 2022. They still get financial aid and all the perks of being on the football team.

That was from Mario day after signing day

I’ve heard and read from podcasts and articles that Mario will be messaging loud and clear what the new program will be and the non-negotiable items he will be implementing. Apparently, the view is that a segment of the current players will be exiting via the portal sometime after the bowl and even after spring. In other words, if this is true, the roster will see considerable shake up and we can’t really even begin to forecast. Still fun though!

During his early signing day press conference, Mario said that between high school kids and transfers, he was expecting to sign between 16-20 kids this year.
