Miami Hurricanes 2023 Roster Composition

So with Saturday's additions I've got us at 86. That's adding in kickers on scholly and not counting Ragone as a scholarship athlete. Mario's really balanced the roster from a position-by-position standpoint, by-and-large.

Qb(3)- adding 1 would be ideal

Rb(6)- good #

Wr(11)- a little heavy; could see a departure here

TE(6) - sames as Wr.

OL(17) maybe a little heavy; Tinilau admitted?
injury exception of some sort(s)? Addition?

DT/DE(16) - for better or worse a good #

LB(9) - excluding Ragone. Good #.

Cb/S(16)- #'s about right considering rumored
moves of a couple cb's to s. Departure/
Addition?

Overall: 2 positions a little heavy, a 3rd possibly, but Mario loves his OL. 1 position (qb) is clearly light. A little more balance leaves 1 or 2 scholarships for say a long snapper (fairly common), a grad-transfer, or deserving walk-on.

*Of course, there could be a handful of departures were yet to be made aware of.
Thank you for posting this. Definitely need 1 more QB. I could see a couple OL leaving, maybe a WR. I’d like to see another DT, obviously QB as I mentioned and maybe a OL and LB.

Updated to include the additions of Shemar Kirk and Anthony Campbell.

One callout is that Kirk is presently unranked on 247. I'll be using a default 0.6999 ranking for him until 247 posts a rating.

We've now added 36 signees since the end of last season.

So we’re at 85 not including the kicker and punter. Ithat means at least two kids on your list will be graduating out, medically redshirting or transferring out very soon … or already have and we just don’t know about it. Or maybe a couple of the transfer pickups will take a blue shirt?

Balom - backup FS
Redding - backup WR

It is interesting that of the incoming recruits, in six positions we'll have a freshmen who is the highest rated recruit at the position.
We need back to back years, and show consistant, and better than predicted, year to year improvement, then we might have something to really cheer about rather than two decades of wishful thinking

We'll get it with Mario, count on it. The real question about next year won't be the recruiting class, but who replaces TVD. Secondarily, we'll be gapped at DB especially safety in a major way.

B. Smith isn’t starting and if Couch starts at corner then these transfer didn’t help us upgrade at the CB position as much as we hoped they would… ijs.

Updated to add Demetrius Freeney.

Mario Cristobal has now signed 38 players, with one being granted a release from his LOI. This is the most incoming new talent signed by the Hurricanes in a single year since at least 2005.

2023: 38 players
2012: 34 players
2008: 32 players
2014: 30 players
2019, 2010: 29 players

So right around 70% of this roster is now 'Mario guys' including a few who Diaz recruited and Cristobal closed. Interested if someone felt like taking on the task of comparing measurables positionally. Clearly a stark contrast size-wise for OL and CB has added lots of length as well. Love this thread as a progress tracker @GojiraCane .

*Terry Roberts needs to be removed

Roberts has been removed.

Interesting fact - we've essentially caught up to FSU in number of portal players. Miami now has 21 on its roster; FSU is at 22. Florida State's group though has less eligibility after this season.

Portal Players - College Football Experience (Miami):
7 years: 1
6 years: 1
5 years: 2
4 years: 5
3 years: 6
2 years: 3
1 year: 3

Portal Players - College Football Experience (Florida State):
7 years: none
6 years: 1
5 years: 5
4 years: 6
3 years: 8
2 years: 3
1 year: none

Here's the current Hurricanes roster in comparison to 2021:

Just looking at that comparison proves why evaluations are as important as blue chip ratios:

Positions where 2021 > 2023
  • WR because of Payton (an all out bust) and Pope (a major disappointment)
  • QB because of Garcia, another all out bust
  • DT is above because of Nesta, which is fair. 2021 had no depth though
  • S was because Tae (an all out bust), Bolden (major disappointment) and Gil (disappointment). Even Harrell was rated above Kinchens, lol. Yeah, the scouting sites are very fallible.
On paper, 2021 wasn't that bad. It was just loaded with guys the were overrated. I don't see that being a systematic problem with Mario. He'll whiff, everyone does. But not up and down the roster like Manny did.

I'd add Couch to that second list of players. Mario brought in Brown, Davis, and Richard this offseason.
