Miami has only been Preseason #1 in the AP Poll 3 times in their history

After reading that Texas has never been #1 in the Preseason AP Poll before, I was curious to research how many times Miami has been #1 in the Preseason AP Poll. They were #1 in 1990, 1992, and 2002.

So, three out of the five times we were the defending national champions. Not the first two times, but the last three times.

Thought it was mildly interesting that Texas is the first preseason #1 to be an underdog in their first game.

I guess it's a curse for us. Also, how ludicrous is it we weren't preseason #1 in 2001. Was it Oklahoma?

It might've been the Gator we slapped around in the Sugar Bowl.

Think so. But I’m pretty sure we weren’t even consensus preseason #1 in every poll in 2002 either, due to the talent we lost to the NFL.

Look at these losers putting us back down to #2 in Week 6 after we beat Troy. I hate these stupid polls. 🤣

Nov 18th and Nov 25th of that season were two of the most fun nights in the WEZ. The night of the Washington game, I forget if it was Mcdougle or Vilma who picked off a pass near the WEZ. If that **** OB didn't almost fall down right there, I don't know what's what. I was a young student at UM, but I sat with my local buddies in the WEZ instead of the student section. What a place to be.

We beat them in (at the end of) the 2000 season, but they may have opened the 2001 season as AP Preseason #1.

Looked it up:

But, other sources say Florida was preseason #1, too.
That's pretty ridiculous. I'd understand the reigning champs t #1 and yea, that UF team was pretty **** good but it was obvious at the end of the 2000 season UM was the best team in the country and was bringing back their QB and plenty of starters. Whatever, matters where you end not where you start.

It was Vilma. Mcdougle picked off a pass against Syracuse if I remember correctly.

We were very lethargic in that game vs. Troy. I think it was actually really close at the half. And they weren't a good team. We were pretty lethargic vs Temple too. (I was at all those home games). And obviously the BC and VT games should have never been that close. I lay that at the feet of Coker and Chud. Every great tram has at least 1 close shave but really none of our games should have been close. My memory for 25 year old Canes games is way too good. The day to day stuff is much harder.

The crazy thing about the BC and VT games were that they were self inflicted to cause them to be so close. BC with all the turnovers and VT with poor special teams play.

The offense also went to sleep at times in the VT game. They were pretty good on defense but we just took our foot off the gas when we went up double digits. People forget we had to survive Ernest Wilford, who was a very good player, dropping a 2pt conversion right in his hands that would have tied it. And we couldn't run out the clock after that. We needed an Ed Reed pick to seal it.
