Thomas is far more than a slight notch below Haulcy.

Several notches. Thomas is Amari Carter-level. Basically a clone.
One is rated the 6 safety in the portal, the other is 9th. Not saying that the 247 rankings are gospel by any means, but those that are paid to evaluate don't think there's a huge gap between the two.

Would they take both?
pretty sure the answer is yes. They view Haulcy as someone who can help us win a game or 2 more. It's been echoed safety is one of the most important in this new Defense and as of right now we got 1 forsure starter. we need both to make sure this train runs good for this season and even then we are still praying one of these younger guy (IE Day ) develops nicely this season.

Something a lil weird to me is if LSU is an option why hasn't he set up a visit yet? when negotiating it's smart to hear the other offer but this has the feeling that if he leaves Miami its over

How often does someone commits the same day as their visit? Far as I recall it doesn’t happen too often

Coming off a visit to Miami on Tuesday, where the Hurricanes rolled out the red carpet, including some time with rapper Rick Ross at dinner, the big question is what comes next in A.J. Haulcy’s recruitment. His agents continue to be in contact with LSU, and the Tigers are working to make up ground for the Big 12 first-team all-conference selection. Sources have said that Haulcy’s deal will likely be in the $700,000 to $800,000 range, but that his asking price is more.

I hope his asking price is more. He just got a six figure car….

So basically, whoever gives him a million. I think that's an overpay but JMO

In my opinion, if the season started today our weakest starter would be whoever the 2nd safety is. I don't mind overpaying here and missing out on a 4th DT or a 6th CB or whoever else we're looking at for Spring portal.

A great safety can sometimes win you a game but can more often lose you a game. See GT and Cuse. We’re going to need to make tackles from the third level of this defense, sucks to say it, but it’s true. It’s also a big part of how coach H relies on his safeties. I don’t know if this Kid is as good as or better than Juquan Johnson for example, but if last years team had Jaquan, might have been a final four contender
