We have 7 at the moment, and even if we don't get our top option we aren't going to bring in NO ONE from the portal.
A minimum number to have of competent WR to run a functional practice with competition is 10, especially for a team using base 3 WR sets, so you're three deep on the depth chart. Your 3s play 1s on practice field.
Ideal number is between 11 and 13, due to potential injuries that will happen at practice and in the season. So I get pushing Fitz over the WR for the season (at number 8) and grab 3 in the portal (two guys [the San Jose St WR] who add depth to make money now [at 9], since they won't have an NFL career, and 1 to impact the top 4 guys [there is 10]).

I'm sure things change now that numbers went to 105 but the few staffs I have been on/around the target number at WR was 7-9 on scholarship. 8 was ideal, 9 was max and only happened if we had to oversign because we lose 4 in this graduating class or we found 1 we loved and didn't want to drop anyone else (a +1 type recruit). Did not want to have 10 guys in that room.

FCS was less scholarships and we tried to have 7, or a max of 8 and didn't want to waste a number above that.

These were 3 WR base offenses. I'm sure it's different if you're consistently in 10 personnel or run a lot of empty. Miami doesn't and no one I've been around has either.

The only positions I've ever seen willingly recruited to be 3 deep are at RB and DL. We wanted 5-6 RBs on the roster and wanted at least 8 DEs and at least 8 DTs. Even on the OL the number was usually around 12-14 total for 5 positions.

Really?! That's a big surprise, cause those guys get A LOT of mileage on practice and off season training.

I'll defer to you on that, I figured 3-deep was what you would want, since 2-deep is your dress roster while the 3rd line in your scout teamers.

Maybe Taylor Edwards is pushing this and is doing the numbers game.

Its typically lower because you can usually have freshmen in the mix quickly at WR. I remember Randy Sanders walked in to ETSU, taking over for Carl Torbush, and with 63 scholarships we had 11 WRs and he immediately came in and cut 6 of them and then signed a few and we went with 7. We used his depth chart spreadsheet that he got from Jimbo at FSU and said it was basically the same philosophy as Phil Fulmer but we had to adjust it down from 85 scholarships to 63. He basically said there's 22 positions on the field and that's 22 less, take 1 off of every spot.

Eli Drinkwitz liked low numbers at WR because it meant more reps for everyone in practice which speeds up development and boosts stamina for gameday. Low numbers and cross train positions for "depth".

I like the dedication to building a good roster but Jesus, why even recruit highschool anymore.

Coaches don't see any value in a single guy they recruited from highschool.
Unfortunately it’s the state of top level cfb right now.
But let’s take a look at the what was considered the gold standard of cfb for the last decade in Alabama.
How many true freshman actually started under Saban? If nil was instituted 10 years ago, how many of those dudes would Saban have sent packing?

The level of patience you can have now with a player is 12 months.

Take the Zayquan Patterson situation. How much was he getting paid compared to the level of talent and commitment he was displaying? I have no information about him and only rumors of poor discipline and commitment.
How in the world do you not replace him with Haulcey from Houston?
These freshman better recognize that there is no patience anymore. If you don’t adapt or act like you got fck you money, your gonna get walking papers.

I regret to inform you the San Jose St WR already “signed” with Louisville. Apparently he was in quite a Hurry

Well played sir, but no regret on this end. If their cool with the number they stand and waiting on a big fish then do you!

Yeah it all makes sense.

Hey I'm from Canada and played college ball here and we had 105 on our squad but only 44 dressed for home games and we have 13 or so receivers 7 RBs including FBs, so it makes sense and I agree with the speed up the process.

I guess they rely on other bodies (i.e., walk ons) to fill in for scout team, it just I hate HATE having 1s vs just trash all the time, but i mean they are the coaches, they know what they're doing. I'm sure Cici/Bain, Bell/Lowe, etc. are up against each other often enough in 1v1s to have that battle.

That’s the consequence of being paid…..you gotta produce and not 3-4 years down the road.

You either bet on potential or roll with proven tape. It’s rare to have a situation now where both the coaches and player have the patience to wait on playing time and production.

I didn't comment or refute any of that…Really didn't read it. Just said, it wasn't 6
Wasn't going after you, not even a little, just a nit wild at these low scholarship numbers for guys with lots of mileage on their feet and to have a functional competitive practice for 1s.

It is obvious they want to partially flip the S room. Not as much as they did at CB, but word is 3 could happen. What does that tell you about what you were thinking during Spring? Haulcy is actually probably bigger than Pruitt so it makes sense that he could play S and move closer to the line in packages. Their is some S talent in the portal. Going to meet Haulcy's team, he's a priority.

This is what stuck out to me. It is rare that, is been reported at least, that Miami has been the one traveling to meet players and not the players visiting Miami. Very telling.

Unfortunately it’s just the name of the game now. I think they gotta bring back the 1 year sit rule.
You still have to bring them in in the hopes 1 or 2 break through early or are willing to wait a few years and develop. But the entire model is on its head now. You have to assume up to 25% of your roster will transfer out every year.
