Freshman Donta Simpson is headed to the transfer portal, per Pete Nakos.

The 6‑foot‑3 defensive lineman from Hollywood, FL, played mostly rotational snaps for this season, finishing with 4 tackles as a freshman.

Simpson was part of Miami’s 2025 recruiting class and had some hype coming in, but with snaps limited and the DL room crowded, he’s looking for a fresh start elsewhere.

Portal season is just heating up, and Simpson won’t be the last Cane to pop up.

Why??

Smells like a contract negotiation
Skipping a playoff game when you are in the rotation to help further a NIL dispute is a deal breaker for me. No way you bring him back after that. I don't hate the kid and wish him well elsewhere, but the culture has been established now and bringing back players that do that can only hurt the culture.

Did he do that?

That is the only scenario possible where a return is a possibility. If he just wants to leave, then good luck to the young man and the relationship is over.
If the portal decision is NIL discussion based, then the timing is not good when you are not in a position of leverage and personally would be a deal breaker for me.
Dont really care if he dressed for the game, or skipped it or whatever. We are making a run and no time for this right now if you want to be a part of the future of the program.

Ridiculous decision in the middle of a playoff run. Especially after seeing the success of the DL. I wish him nothing but the worst
I’m typically a “Hope the best for them unless they go to a rival” guy but leaving mid-playoff run as a guy who has gotten snaps at a position where we aren’t super deep, yeah **** that

Maybe he’s not wanting to wait 3 years to be a real contributor . We just landed 3 more projects just just like him and two more who will play a lot Next year imo . This is a good problem to haves. I see some ol leaving too with this class coming in . 2 who will prob play and 3 high ceiling projects

With Russel and Donta Simpson gone, who do we have left at DT? By my calculations, we got Justin Scott, hopefully Moten, and maybe an undersized Blount slides inside. Guessing Artavious didnt work out. Anyone else we missing?
