I think it’s a good piece and appreciate Steele’s perspective. Over a span of 7-8 years or so prior to that 07’ Alabama team they averaged about 7 wins a season and had a couple 3-4 win stinkers worked in. Not saying we have Bama in our sites but they’ve had some lean years going back some time.
I’m also not comparing Mario and Saban. But I do believe Mario’s style of management mirrors his and not just due to his time spent with him. There’s the eternal argument of delegator vs specialist as far as coaching style goes. Each have been successful and each have failed. Both Mario and Saban obviously got into the delegator role and strongly rely on infrastructure and a premium staff. AKA the anti Manny approach to program management.
Humbly I’ll say Mario learned here as a successful player on a successful set of squads. He’s learned from the best whether we like Saban or not. He’s also managed his own success based on his personal traits. I’m not saying it’s a guarantee, but the pain right now is necessary. Good news is we have a president who fully supports the program, other admin support in place, increasing financial flexibility, and a trustworthy AD.
