Miami athletics has returned to Nike as the program’s apparel sponsor, agreeing to a lucrative 10-year contract worth more than $200 million.

Nike was the apparel sponsor of the Hurricanes from 1987-2015, before the University made an unprecedented decision to sign with Adidas.

Now, Miami is back wearing the iconic swoosh.

Miami found themselves in a strong negotiating position following its national championship appearance, also coming off the footsteps of other premier programs signing apparel deals.

Adidas put pen to paper with Penn State on July 1, in a 10-year, $300 million dollar deal, and agreed to a 10-year, $100 million deal with the University of Tennessee the next day.

With the bar set high, UM went into negotiations with the upper hand and found that Adidas was unwilling to match Nike’s offer according to reports.

The deal marks a role reversal from when Miami was last in apparel negotiations 12 years ago. Nike was unwilling to match Adidas’ offer in 2015, leading to the longstanding Adidas partnership the University had until now.

The offer reportedly puts Miami as the second-highest collegiate investment from Nike, just behind Oregon, where the apparel giant was founded.

UM was in the midst of a 12-year deal partnership with Adidas, set to expire in 2027. The agreement was the longest-standing collegiate partnership in Adidas history — also the first all-sport apparel partnership the company had with a top program.

Adidas had spent the last decade investing in South Florida sports, from high school all the way to Universities.

South Florida talents such as Malachi Toney, Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith and Miami recruits A’mir Sears and Nick Lennear all signed with the three stripes within the last year.

In 2025, Adidas signed a five-year, $13.5 million deal to outfit all 41 of Miami-Dade County High Schools’ athletics uniforms, cementing itself as the leading athletic apparel company in the greater Miami area.

But while UM and Adidas have been great partners for more than a decade, UM and Nike have historic ties.

Miami’s original partnership with Nike marked the first all-sports apparel contract in collegiate history, and continued for four of UM’s national titles in football (1987, 1989, 1999, 2001) and two in baseball (1999, 2001).

The Hurricanes join South Carolina as Power Four programs to sign with Nike in the past year, with the decision set to take effect when Adidas’ deal expires next July ahead of the 2027 athletic season.

You are both correct. @TheOriginalCane was adamant a Nike deal was going to happen. Then he swung hard the other way. My best guess is that general knowledge that the inner circle at UM prefers Nike determined the first prediction. Then the Adidas offer (with Rad's thumbs-up) determined the second. Of course, @Bender predicted this whole saga months ago: Adidas lowballs and Nike swoops in last-second with a big-boy offer.

President Joe went to UM back in the day. I knew that he would prefer Nike, all other things being equal. I was unaware of Manny Kadre's role. Multiple people with very good UM intel texted me that they were shocked by this. The "circle of trust" had to be tiny on this deal.

Between Radakovich, the deals with Dade County schools, the NIL money being offered by adidas, and the drumbeat of "Nike customer service sucks" coming from Harry Rothwell, I thought that adidas had a prohibitive lead.

Thank God that Nike learned how to bid on a university apparel deal from eBay snipers...

First, if the Nike deal is "heavily up-front cash apparently", then I think a casual reader of this board can figure out WHY THAT IS. Maybe you can peruse a DIFFERENT thread, one that has a couple hundred pages thus far. It's pretty smart to get the Nike cash "up-front" and then ride the annual revenue wave of the patch deal. Very smart.

Second, you have completely missed the point on my comments about forecasting. I did not say it was easy for everyone in every industry. WHAT I DID SAY is that, based on your comments on STOCK PRICES, that my comments were related to forecasting and guidance FOR PUBLICLY-TRADED COMPANIES.

Since UM is not a business organization with shareholders, none of your "gotcha" nonsense matters. It's way too late to get in a time machine to go back to 2014 Beta Blake to convince him that the Nike deal would be better. I'm not sure why you are trying to criticize me, a person who has worked in corporate finance and tax for publicly-traded companies for 25 years, based on Beta Blake's inability to do forecasting.

you would think that but Nike pays Michigan/ not jordan Brand. Nike made them a jordan brand school. Nike manages everything. It's not for sure just a Nike deal for Miami.

 

I read that Adidas had that bad year because of their sudden breakup with Kanye. and that otherwise, it would had had a normal year for adidas.

Stop with that bull****. Stop acting like "oh, adidas had a bad day".

The reality is that adidas made a colossal misjudgment with Kanye West, both with his character and personality (let's not pretend there were no warning signs) and also in basing so much of their product line on him.

Oh, yeah, the "sudden breakup". Like that's what was happening there. adidas had YEARS of reports about Kanye's work habits and how he treated collaborators, and they did NOTHING about it until he started dropping the anti-Semitic comments.

The point is, Nike has a spotless record on making a profit year after year. Conveniently, you IGNORED the parts of my post that showed what Nike's CURRENT profit is, compared to adidas's CURRENT profit.
