A quick update following Miami's 38-26 win versus Virginia Tech:
Points For: Yesterday's offensive output moved the 2021 Hurricanes to 8th most prolific offense in the last twenty five years. Since Van Dyke took over, the offense is averaging 34.4 points per game in Power 5 contests.
Points Allowed: Although the 26 points allowed last night was their lowest since Central Conn State, it moved the 2021 Hurricanes to the most generous in points allowed, supplanting the 2012 team.
Virginia Tech: The series has been marked by substantial wins or losses. The average margin of victory for either team has been 14 points in the last 25 encounters. Eight of the last ten games saw the victor win by 12 or more points.
Additional fun facts:
- Although points allowed continue to be less than ideal, this is the third consecutive game that Miami has lowered their PA versus the previous week
- If we isolate to Weeks 5 - 11, where Van Dyke took over against Power 5 opposition, the Hurricanes offense in 2021 would rank as the third most productive in the last twenty five years with 241 points scored. That is only eclipsed by the 2009 squad (250 points) and 2001 team (268 points).
- Meanwhile in Austin, the more well-funded Texas Longhorns not only have two fewer wins than the Hurricanes this season but have an even more generous defense (33 points allowed per game versus Miami's 30).
