Couple things:
1. You ONLY look at FBS vs FBS competition when comparing stats. FCS games should never be factored.
2. YPP is a lot better metric than YPG.
3. Redzone defense has been getting more and more important as the game has skewed towards the offense over the past several years. Almost every team gains yards. But can you force turnovers and/or hold teams to FG attempts when the field is smaller?
That being said, here is where Miami ranks in those metrics vs season averages.
Overall YPP allowed: 87th in the country
Alabama: 6.51 YPP allowed, and Bama is averaging 6.81 for the season (#8 overall)
App State: 4.47 YPP allowed, and App State is averaging 6.38 for the season (#31 overall)
Michigan State: 6.31 YPP allowed, and Michigan State is averaging 6.52 for the season (#22 overall)
Virginia: 5.68 YPP allowed, and Virginia is averaging 7.05 for the season (#4 overall)
North Carolina: 5.16 YPP allowed, and UNC is averaging 6.90 for the season (#6 overall)
NC State: 6.58 YPP allowed, and NC State is averaging 5.81 for the season (#54 overall)
Pittsburgh: 7.43 YPP allowed, and Pitt is averaging 6.46 for the season (#27 overall)
So, #87 in the country is entirely unacceptable. If you're looking for any reasons to not throw yourself off a bridge, it can be said that we have faced 6 of the 31 best offenses in the county in YPP, including 3 in the top 8. We held Bama & MSU below their season averages.....UVA, UNC, and App State WELL below their season averages, and NC State & Pitt both had better than average performances against us. Overall, pretty embarrassing. Especially when you consider what our talent level SHOULD be on paper. But there are some pretty good offenses here who have put up good numbers all season, so when you factor in the schedule, maybe it looks marginally better. But still very underwhelming.
RedZone defense:
We are currently 93rd in the country in RedZone defense. Absolutely abysmal. Giving up a TD on 65.4% of trips (17 out of 26). And giving up a score on 100% of trips, which is obviously dead last in the country. 26 times an FBS offense has entered our redzone, and 26 times they have walked away with points. So we're giving up a lot of red zone trips, almost 4 per game, and we haven't gotten a stop all season. Vomit. And even worse, as good as the offenses have been that we played, one thing they haven't been great at is red zone efficiency. UNC, UVA, NC State, App State, and Michigan State are ALL outside the top 40 in redzone TD percentage. Of course, except when they play us.
Bottom line, yes, the offenses we've played have been pretty good overall. But when you have the blue chip ratio we do, you should be able to be better against a team like NC State, than say, Louisville or Wake Forest was. And, as usual with this team, when the defense has played pretty well in stretches of games, the offense is stuck in the mud. App State for example, and the first half against UVA. So the defense stinks, but even when they do play well, the offense can't match it and we just go in circles. Maddening.
