Miami’s total defense climbs to # 47

Now here's a thinking man.

We're actually statistically average on D, yardage wise.
The point totals are working close to that as well.
Given that, statistically average is pretty bad for a Miami team.

The offenses we're going to play average over 10ppg less than our first 7 opponents so hoping for improvement.

If Manny actually wins these last 4 games, the spin is going to be that he brought the team back from the precipice after to win it's last 6. The comeback kid! ... But we will all know the truth. We beat NCS and Pitt on the last series of each game because of the offense and because of luck. And these are very poor teams we're playing in these back 4.

Someone posted that we'll win the next 3, be in a position to clinch the Coastal, then lose up there to Duke.
At first I thought that he was crazy. No way that happens if we're on a 5 game winning streak.

Then I thought about it.....

That's the problem.
The fact that i even have to think about dropping a game to a bad Dook team.

Miami should move up pretty drastically these next 4 weeks. Miami has played 5 top 20 offenses. Dont think anyone else has played more than 2.

There’s nothing average about being in the 80’s - 100’s in most categories friend. That’s awful for Miami or anybody else.

We’re ranked this bad and thats with us playing a game against CCSU lol. A team that could barely take the snap . People like to talk about the offenses we’ve played but leave out this game. That’s one game removed from the the total. Yet we’re ranked horribly.

I don’t need stats to know we’re a badly coached defense , you know why? I have eyes, I can see receivers running wide open in the middle of the field every freaking game. Thats not because we’re playing Pitt or NC State. That's because we have slow guys guarding better athletes , busted assignments or horrible schematics. Lastly mix in leading the nation in missed tackles. That has zero to do with schedule lol.

We’re a bad defense , y’all need to stop making excuses for the mediocrity.

I did say "statistically" average. With leaving out CCSU, all the teams we play average the same yardage and points vs everyone else they play as they did us. We're in the bottom third in D because we played the top third Offenses. That's just the numbers talking. I get into that a bit.

Some guy tried to convince Bill Parcells a few years back to go for it on every 4th down because, statistically, the numbers say so.
Of course he laughed in his face.
I'm not being that guy here.

Let me be clear that statistically, or any other kind of average is unacceptable to me.
I know I don't like what I'm seeing.
I also know the numbers are lying.

Couple things:

1. You ONLY look at FBS vs FBS competition when comparing stats. FCS games should never be factored.
2. YPP is a lot better metric than YPG.
3. Redzone defense has been getting more and more important as the game has skewed towards the offense over the past several years. Almost every team gains yards. But can you force turnovers and/or hold teams to FG attempts when the field is smaller?

That being said, here is where Miami ranks in those metrics vs season averages.

Overall YPP allowed: 87th in the country

Alabama: 6.51 YPP allowed, and Bama is averaging 6.81 for the season (#8 overall)
App State: 4.47 YPP allowed, and App State is averaging 6.38 for the season (#31 overall)
Michigan State: 6.31 YPP allowed, and Michigan State is averaging 6.52 for the season (#22 overall)
Virginia: 5.68 YPP allowed, and Virginia is averaging 7.05 for the season (#4 overall)
North Carolina: 5.16 YPP allowed, and UNC is averaging 6.90 for the season (#6 overall)
NC State: 6.58 YPP allowed, and NC State is averaging 5.81 for the season (#54 overall)
Pittsburgh: 7.43 YPP allowed, and Pitt is averaging 6.46 for the season (#27 overall)

So, #87 in the country is entirely unacceptable. If you're looking for any reasons to not throw yourself off a bridge, it can be said that we have faced 6 of the 31 best offenses in the county in YPP, including 3 in the top 8. We held Bama & MSU below their season averages.....UVA, UNC, and App State WELL below their season averages, and NC State & Pitt both had better than average performances against us. Overall, pretty embarrassing. Especially when you consider what our talent level SHOULD be on paper. But there are some pretty good offenses here who have put up good numbers all season, so when you factor in the schedule, maybe it looks marginally better. But still very underwhelming.

RedZone defense:

We are currently 93rd in the country in RedZone defense. Absolutely abysmal. Giving up a TD on 65.4% of trips (17 out of 26). And giving up a score on 100% of trips, which is obviously dead last in the country. 26 times an FBS offense has entered our redzone, and 26 times they have walked away with points. So we're giving up a lot of red zone trips, almost 4 per game, and we haven't gotten a stop all season. Vomit. And even worse, as good as the offenses have been that we played, one thing they haven't been great at is red zone efficiency. UNC, UVA, NC State, App State, and Michigan State are ALL outside the top 40 in redzone TD percentage. Of course, except when they play us.

Bottom line, yes, the offenses we've played have been pretty good overall. But when you have the blue chip ratio we do, you should be able to be better against a team like NC State, than say, Louisville or Wake Forest was. And, as usual with this team, when the defense has played pretty well in stretches of games, the offense is stuck in the mud. App State for example, and the first half against UVA. So the defense stinks, but even when they do play well, the offense can't match it and we just go in circles. Maddening.

Good stuff.

I‘m a firm believer in the eye ball test , that’s if you’re being honest with yourself as a fan.

Yup. And again, we have held 5 of the 7 opponents below their season averages in YPP. So, on the surface, that's obviously good. But, as I mentioned with the redzone defense being so bad, although those 5 opponents didn't just move the ball in chunks at will, when they did move the ball, it resulted in points:

Bama: 4 trips, 2 TDs
App State: 2 trips, 1 TD
Michigan State: 5 trips, 4 TDs
UVA: 2 trips, 1 TD
UNC: 3 trips, 3 TDs.

I already mentioned that every single trip has resulted in a score, but we haven't held a single one of these teams to under 50% TD percentage. So yes, they didn't gain a ton of yards, but on the drives they did get, they're scoring TDs. For context, Penn State leads the country in TD% allowed, at 25.9%. UGA is 28.5%. Clemson is 31.5%. So the elite defenses, they don't give up a TD more than half the time a team gets down there. But we do, even to the teams who aren't really good at it, and also the teams who we're holding below their averages in YPP. As always with this team, there's just no correlation. Oh, you held UNC a yard below their average? That's awesome. But you let them score 3 TDs on 3 redzone trips. Yeah, not gonna get it done.

Oh, and we're also 109th in the country in 20+ yard plays allowed. So we can't stop you in the redzone, literally ever. And you're gonna get a bunch of explosive plays. Just simply nowhere near good enough.

If we just simply bend and don't break wed be 10000 Times better off this year esp with the O we've seen since TVD took over
