Miami’s total defense climbs to # 47

Mario defense is currently ranked #75th nationally playing a far worse schedule than Miami if we are talking about mis managing talent.
Mario all though the HC is an offensive coach , it’s his job to fire the dc after the season. Manny on the other hand is the dc and the leader of the defense. Also one is ranked in the top 7’and won multiple conference titles. This is comparing Apples to a recliner.

The night is darkest just before the dawn of birth.

To corch, or not to coach? That is the question—Whether 'tis nobler in the scheme to suffer the outside contains and counters of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of fans, And, by opposing, end them?

If The money people at Miami want Mario and Diaz isn’t it (which we know). Mario gonna be in Miami by signing day.

Hey, Miami IS 47th...................................................................................in rushing defense.

120th against the pass.
Fire Rumph....oh wait.

I am more interested in where UM played compared to those averages.

Yards against UM (difference from average):

UVA - 449 (-96)
Pitt. - 587 (+62)
Ala. - 501 (+7)
UNC - 382 (-100.8)
App. - 326 (-138)
MSU - 454 (+21)
NC St. - 421 (+5)

On its face, this doesn't look too bad. We kept UVA, UNC, and UVA well under their season average YPG, let Pitt go off on us a little bit, but kept NC State, MSU, and Alabama to within striking distance of their season average YPG. But these stats include games against far lesser competition.

I'm more interest in what these stats look like when you take out games against FCS (and G5) schools. Generally, I expect most of those offenses' yards per game will come down a ways. For instance, UNC had 540 yards against Western Carolina and 607 yards against Georgia State; NC State put up 525 against USF and 505 against Furman; and Pitt put up 707 against New Hampshire and 598 against UMass (we did a TAD better). I'd also toss App State from the analysis altogether, because they are a G5 team who hasn't played any P5 schools this season besides UM (so it shouldn't shock anyone when their offense has a relatively bad game against Miami).

To me, it looks like two things are true at once: (1) Miami has played mostly statistically strong offenses this season and that has negatively impacted our stats; but (2) we haven't done better than the average P5 team has against these offenses. To me, that indicates that, at best, we're an average (and possibly below average) defense.

Great writeup NFZ. Agree 100%. Manny is not the worst DC out there, he is just average though. And he does less with more, since our starters were ranked much higher coming out of high school than the vast majority of comparable average defenses.

Miami of Ohio’s total defense ranking climbed to number 47. The University of Miami on the other hand is ranked 93rd. Thank god we got rid of Blake Baker!!
I see what you did there. You were trying to catch Borry Jaxsoff to see if he will use it has the thread title in his next column

Manny when he was dc talked a lot about the yards per play stat as being in e of the most important.

I think we suck at that too.

The slurp bridgade will come out with some other metrics saying our d ain’t that bad. People talk **** about lashlee but if it wasn’t for him we would have lost at least 5 more games on the last two years.

I will say that, as is Manny's wont, the D plays better in the 4th quarter.

Bama 3
App 6
MSU 21
UVA 3
UNC 7
NCST 10
Pitt 3

MSU is the outlier, and that's . . . . just what they do to people. See Michigan game. And we set them up with turnovers inside the 30, TWICE in that quarter. This has been the story of Manny as DC. We thought it was Baker, but it's just Manny.

So glad Manny bet on himself this year. Remember, he had a chance to hire a DC and chose to handle both the DC and HC responsibilities..

Now here's a thinking man.

We're actually statistically average on D, yardage wise.
The point totals are working close to that as well.

Given that, statistically average is pretty bad for a Miami team.

The offenses we're going to play average over 10ppg less than our first 7 opponents, so hoping for improvement.
