Miami’s total defense climbs to # 47

Who would have thought we would replace Dorito with someone just as bad. 🤮

Lose your top 2 DE's, haven't recruited well enough on the back end(back 7), and face elite QB's and offenses week after week. Here you go.

Miami's defense was ranked much higher with Manny focusing on defense only, with better personnel, and without facing so many elite offenses. 6 of the 7 non D-2 teams we faced have offenses ranked in the top 33 nationally. We literally haven't faced a bad offense all season really.

Total offense rankings faced:

2.)UVA -545 YPG
5.)Pittsburgh- 525 YPG
10.)Alabama- 494 YPG
12.)UNC -482.8 YPG
19.)APP State -464 YPG
33.)Michigan State - 433 YPG
55.)N.C. State - 416 YPG

QB TD passes nationally ranked:

3.)Brennan Armstrong-27 TD's
4.)Bryce Young-26 TD's
4.)Kenny Pickett-26 TD's
10.)Devin Leary-21 TD's
13.)Sam Howell-19 TD's
28.)Peyton Thorne-15 TD's
35-Chase Brice-14 TD's

It isn't an excuse for poor performance but that is the reality. It will be an even bigger indictment on Manny's crappy defense if we get scorched by teams like GT, FSU, and Duke, all of which have poor offenses.

Meanwhile, Pickett just hit another slant for 15 yds (and the DB missed the tackle, giving him another 10 yds).

Other than McCloud who was a Golden recruit these are now all Manny’s players.

Zero playmakers at LB and DE, his supposed specialties.
I like Harvey’s and chantz Williams potential but we shouldn’t have been counting on them being the next incarnation of Phillips or Rousseau

just demanding the basics of tackling would make us at least average (i.e., 60s or better)

to be #93 with our talent may well be the worst utilization of d talent in all of CFB

btw, back up the Brinks Truck and offer the Baylor AD

If we can't get Mario then maybe see if that AD and Aranda come as a package deal

I am more interested in where UM played compared to those averages.

Yards against UM (difference from average):

UVA - 449 (-96)
Pitt. - 587 (+62)
Ala. - 501 (+7)
UNC - 382 (-100.8)
App. - 326 (-138)
MSU - 454 (+21)
NC St. - 421 (+5)

On its face, this doesn't look too bad. We kept UVA, UNC, and App. well under their season average YPG, let Pitt go off on us a little bit, but kept NC State, MSU, and Alabama to within striking distance of their season average YPG. But these stats include games against far lesser competition.

I'm more interest in what these stats look like when you take out games against FCS (and G5) schools. Generally, I expect most of those offenses' yards per game will come down a ways. For instance, UNC had 540 yards against Western Carolina and 607 yards against Georgia State; NC State put up 525 against USF and 505 against Furman; and Pitt put up 707 against New Hampshire and 598 against UMass (we did a TAD better). I'd also toss App State from the analysis altogether, because they are a G5 team who hasn't played any P5 schools this season besides UM (so it shouldn't shock anyone when their offense has a relatively bad game against Miami).

To me, it looks like two things are true at once: (1) Miami has played mostly statistically strong offenses this season and that has negatively impacted our stats; but (2) we haven't done better than the average P5 team has against these offenses. To me, that indicates that, at best, we're an average (and possibly below average) defense.

Mario defense is currently ranked #75th nationally playing a far worse schedule than Miami if we are talking about mis managing talent.
