I know the MetroRail construction was started at the campus in 1980.
Does anyone know when it was completed?

Completed in 1984. I started at UM in 1986, I can guarantee you that University Station was operative in 1986, at the very least. I rode it downtown to the Knight Center (with a MetroMover transfer) to watch the UM basketball team play.

I remember it being 1985....Douglas and University stops

You might be right. The overall MetroRail opened in mid-1984, that was when the infamous Ronald Reagan comments happened during the dedication (when he talked about how much the Metro cost every man, woman, and child in Dade). It's possible that some of the stations did not open until 1985, so I would trust your memory here.

EDIT: Reagan made these remarks in March 1985:

In a speech to local government leaders in Washington last March, President Reagan called the federal subsidy for the Metrorail a ''$1 billion mistake.''

Reagan said, "It would have been a lot cheaper to buy everyone a limousine" than provide a $1-billion Metrorail system that serves fewer than 10,000 daily riders.

I lived in Miami in 1985...but moved to St Pete in 86...Chuck was a GA in 86, and I vividly remember taking it to the University stop in 86...

90% sure on the start date because of the re-bar and concrete guys coming into the liquor store I worked in.
'85 finish means about 4 -5 years years to get that thing built, from scratch, back then.

With the overall system already in place and a 2024 start, there's a shot it's ready to go for the '27 season.

I used it frequently when in town from 95-2000....And if my kids were with me they loved it. But back then, I stayed at the University Inn (no longer there) which as you know, was right across Ponce from UM...

You may very well be correct on the time needed to build. On the plus side, Dade has been talking about this for a while, so the route is already pre-approved. On the negative side, the original MetroRail used some existing railroad track right-of-way, I'm not sure they have that right-of-way going up to Hard Rock, though.

Good point.
It looks like about an 8 mile run from where MetroRail is on NW 72nd (@ I95) to HRS.
Looks like tough sledding ....unless they decide to just hug I95 to the Turnpike?

I'm sure that the Broward/PB contingent would agree to a 10 cents gas tax and a 1 cent sales tax to fund this.
