MELTDOWN! - WE ARE THE MOST REASONABLE FANS IN CFB

Difference is Bama fans show up to games. They've always had sell-outs, even in the Gene Stallings, Mike DuBose and Mike Shula years. Their fans are rabid and they give money to that school like nobody else in the game, aside from maybe ND or Texas. ****, Bama boosters paid off the mortgage on Saban's house, to the tune of 3.1 million bucks. So they've got skin in the game.

Our fans can't be bothered to show up to games or to give to the university. They want us to win like Bama, and to pay for a coach like Saban and all his assistants, but they don't want to put in the effort or money to actually support the team.

It's the South Florida way, and the curse of being a "microwave dynasty." We're more concerned with being seen at high-profile games, being associated with a winner, as long as it doesn't cost us much money or effort. And if things go wrong and the team doesn't do well, well somebody in the UM admin better get their shnit together! But don't expect the fans to pay any money; we'll whine like Bama fans and fly banners instead, so that we can get a few tweets and some coverage on ESPN and Yahoo!

You might have had a point if we hadn't won MORE than Bama with the same inequities - fan base, $, etc. And blaming the fan base for a 10 year mediocre record or last years debacle makes me downright apoplectic

It's not unique to South Florida. Almost every school in a major metropolitan city has ****** attendance. Most of them don't even have relevant programs. You can go the Rose Bowl and find swaths of empty seats when UCLA plays a ranked opponent. And in the case of Miami, you have a smaller alumni base with fewer alumni staying in the area.

Right, I recognize that. But UCLA is a different beast than UM--UCLA has never won anything of note, so their fans have never gotten used to being associated with a winner. So they seem to accept their fate a bit more than UM fans.

Take USC fans, for example. Similar make-up of a private, urban school with a moderately-sized alumni base that has had some periods of success after nearly 30 years of irrelevance, including a couple NCs in the early 2000s, followed by a few recent years of mediocrity. They get decent crowds, even for games against FCS teams. Maybe it's because I don't know many USC fans, but I haven't seen national reports of USC fans flying banners, continually criticizing the president of the University, etc, etc.

Seems like we're a special breed of spoiled here at UM.

I'm not blaming the fan base for the performance on the field. I'm blaming the fan base (a little) for acting like spoiled kids. Again, it'd be one thing if we had a fan base that actually gave anything to the team; then I could see creating as much havoc as possible to get the attention of the admin.

But, as has been said by many different people, UM fans treat UM as a pro team instead of a college team; most UM fans don't give a crap about the university, and don't donate to the athletic department, but they loved the feeling they got from being associated with a winner when UM was dominant, and now they feel they've got the right to expect that level of success, even without giving anything in return.

Your argument has some merit but you're leaving out that the fan-base has always treated this like a pro team, and it's actually a pretty big part of what made us successful in the first place. This has never been a normal college gig. Win and you get crowds (for the most part). Lose and you get fired. It's only a recent thing that we expect anything else.

In a weird way, the fan base and all their fickleness has acted as the Silent Hand for this program that steps in and forces change when the situation becomes toxic. Which is what you see right now, same as in 2011.

I love this clarifier in bold above. I hate to break it to you but regardless of how much or how little the fans donate to the team, that doesn't excuse the admin and their associates for the following (the last decade aka 10 full seasons):

1. 72-54 Overall Record
2. 41-39 Conference Record
3. 1 Bowl Win in 7 appearances
4. Zero BCS Games + Zero Conference Championships
5. Extensions to Coker, Shannon and Golden

This is MOSTLY on the admin and their decision making. We were able to have AMAZING success with not much to show for it (in terms of donations), prior to 2004, yet somehow TODAY we make more money than ever (see the money myth thread) and have the AWFUL results.

Acting like spoiled kids, is this real life? We haven't been relevant since 2003; who are these fans? What does this have to do with the university as a whole?
You love to point the finger at the fans and their donations. In fact you get off on this. I don't see the relevance when the real issue is the decision makers.

First, this is insanely dumb and a tangent. This is an football board and you're complaining about the fact that people don't care for the university as a whole...TANGENT. People are here to talk sports. People are here to focus on football (on the football board), there not here to talk about our marine biology department. Do you need me to explain why again?

Second, we haven't had success for over a decade. You confuse "spoiled" with "standards" and "accountability". No one here is spoiled, we've been abused and used.

"and now they feel they've got the right to expect that level of success, even without giving anything in return."

There is no "success". Did you see those numbers above? UM treats their athletics like a *****. They take and take and take and put nothing back...oh wait

Why are you such a Potato?

The best part of this completely false image is the $350 million that Stephen Ross fronted to upgrade the stadium. UM had ZERO to do with that. And what the **** does UHealth and Student Activities Center have to do with football? It's not like we didn't already have a good medical program to begin with. It's just a bunch of PR nonsense to cover for the fact our team is not good, and hasn't been for a decade.

SC has a lot of ****** crowds, too, and the Coliseum is near campus. Plus their enrollment is considerably larger than Miami's.

Complete farce...that urban edge of Coral Gables ranks right up there with Compton or Liberty City...RIGHT gotcha

Sabans been missing on targets n its why they struggling and other teams r getting better..........now if we can wake the *** up

From time to time we get a post from some UM alumnus or current student snob who disses football fans because they didn't contribute financially to the school. This is for you.

I am an alumnus of the University of Tennessee. I am a UM fan. I have attended games for fifty+ years. My children are UM football fans.

Two are college grads, none attended the U. I have been a season ticket holder for decades, and have traveled coast to coast. Almost all of the trips were with a core group that over the years included my friend's grown children and their friends. These friends include FSU and Auburn grads, all hard core Canes fans. I have only casual interest in Vols football and it would probably take free airfare, hotel, and game tickets to get me to one.

We are all hard-core fans because we all from Miami-Dade and have enjoyed UM football from the days before and during when it changed the face of modern football. I was in the stands in the OB, JRS, underwear park and whatever.

Despite holding my nose at the level of coaching I still get excited about UM football because I know there will be good athletes on the field.

Honestly, in my opinion the University of Miami is not that great a school. It has a nice little campus, but there are many great ones across the country. That's not to say I don't believe one can't get a good education there. A good education is a function of a student's effort+peers+teachers and, in some disciplines, maybe facilities. None of this matters much to me. Oh, I almost forgot, my best friend who's done almost all of this with me did sent his son to UM. He's the one who, as a student, used to sit in the upper corner of the OB and read a book and has never traveled to an away game as a student or a graduate because he doesn't give a ****.

I watch UM football because I grew up with it and because of the great football experiences over the years, not because I feel compelled to support the band, the hospital, the marine facility, whatever. Without Canes football there is no "The U" there is only a smallish private school in Coral Gables attended by mostly people from out of town. Not to be totally negative, I love attending Canes baseball, concerts, and theater. Did I mention the girls at UT are better looking?

Feel free to "fire for effect."

You can say that again!

Bama fans are angry because they rightly expect national championships under saban. Anyone knocking them for their anger is a ******. Their expectations are not out of kilter just like ours weren't in the early 2000s. When you consistently perform at a high level and win you get fans that are unhappy with anything less than a National Championship.

Thats how how we used to be and still should be. A large segment of our fan base have forgotten that.
