Measuring Great Teams

How many players on this team start / contribute to any top ten team? For me it’s 4

- Lyle
- Bain
- Francis M
- Lofton

In answering this question, you likely find out where we rank against true contenders.

Going on year 4 if I’m not mistaken, how much longer do we need?
Idk. But we aren't there yet. We can't rely on portal players every year. HS recruiting needs to be better. It's good, but not on the level of TX, GA, OSU, Oregon, etc. If we want to win a championship, we got to have numerous top 5-10 recruiting classes

I just don’t think UM will ever be where UT UGA OSU Bama LSU or Oregon are tbh. We should though be right behind those teams perennially in the 7-10 range with a chance at least for an upset of one of those.

Appreciate the responses! Not trying to be a Debbie downer, just trying to level set. So after reading this. I would say this is a roster that should contend for the ACC title? Schedule isn’t favorable in terms of consecutive games. But seems like the consensus is we have the talent.
If this is your point it is true. We should be in the ACC title game.

Recruiting wise yes. Can't see being top 5 yearly being realistic. Grabbing an occasional top 5 class and being 7-12 consistently seems like our best case scenario.

Since Mario has gotten here we’ve finished no worse than 13 and had multiple top ten classes, even a top 5 class. Depends on the site you wanna use. That SHOULD be enough to run through the ACC consistently and make yearly playoff appearances at the bare minimum.

I’m all for stacking classes but Washington knocked off Texas a few years back to make the Natty, I’m willing to bet they didn’t recruit nearly as good as Texas.. probably not even us on paper. They had a game changer at qb though

I'm aware of his classes since he got here. It hasn't transferred to the field. Mario is a terrible game day coach. He needs lots of talented players. He gets some talented players, but not enough. Washington was an outlier. The teams i mentioned have a shot at the title every year because they stack talent. We don't stack talent year after year. The 13th class won't get it done. I don't think we'll be top 10 this cycle. Georgia is top 5 every year. See the difference?

I'm suspect I'm in an abuse relationship with the Canes, but I'm pretty sure the sense of intellectual superiority I get from reading CIS daily makes it worthwhile. Carpe diem, *******!

His game day coaching hasn't hurt him nearly as bad as his coordinator hires. Dawson has been solid but Gattis, Steele, and Guidry = pretty awful collectively. And this is what ultimately affects your players' development paths + the on field result.

I think your original question was flawed for the point you were trying to prove...

Top 10??? Thats a whole lotta teams in the current landscape.
Pre NIL you had a top 5, then a huge gap then 6-15 then another sizeable gap. I thought going to a 12 team playoff would still have some issues over 12/13 but I did not expect it to be as close as it was because the gap between top 5 is not nearly as big. So I agree on paper we have the talent to be a top 10 team and yes in year 4 ACC champ under Mario should obviously be the goal when we are likely going to be picked by some to win the ACC but without a doubt in top 3 and betting odds top 2.

I think the point you were probably trying to make is look at the last 5 NC teams and how many kids on this current team would start for them? NC is where we are trying to get at. I dont care how our roster stacks up to Boise St. and ASU I want to know what we need to get a championship.

If we are comparing to Miami 2001, LSU 2019, Clemson 2018, Alabama 2020 I get the point.

Different era now, we have alot of talent that is top 10-12 team talent.

It’s year 4 and if you think our roster is in the level of the Oregon’s, LSU’s, OSU’s, UGA’s, Bama, Texas, etc. of the world then I can’t help you.
Those rosters are probably better. But we've leapfrogged a lot of teams in between, and there is more parity between the top rosters and the next level than ever before.

Establish the brand with consistent winning, and then we can close that final gap pretty fast.

The amount of sadness and low T in this place is disgusting.
A lot of guys don’t know how to find the proper injection site. They spend their Monday mornings crying in the mirror in emotional pain, before calling their doctor to return the dosage and get a refund.

The rest are rubbing ginseng and Cajun spices on their junk twice a day.

So, this list makes sense.

Yes, you are 100% right. I was multitasking watching hockey and I think this encapsulates my thought process perfectly. Reason being I think we need top 5 talent to overcome Mario’s deficiencies which are not a secret.
