McShay talks Miami Defense

Talk to any OSU fan (ok don’t but still) and they’re worried about their DT depth just like everyone else

It’s dangerous to sit in this vacuum of Miami only stuff
Even last year I picked OSU but it felt weird cause watching them in the playoffs cause I thought their DT depth was bad. And they still won, I would still favor them over anyone but they not some unstoppable force. Crazy that DT feels more spread out and not hoarded anymore by UGA and Bama. I like that big **** we have next year coming in pause, he going to be a problem. He may take this to another level

I have been saying for awhile that the style of play is great for big games but it also allows for unsuspected teams to clip you.. Has happened every year for mario, UO fans expect it and still chirp about it. Go into Ohio st as underdog and missing star player and still win but turnaround and lose to Stanford a few weeks later. Nov swoons here..

Last year as good as we were with #1 offense we were in battles every week and could never develop any younger guys, every week talk about tight rotations.. Lets see if we change narrative, this season.

I don't know that our rotations are that far off from where they need to be. Do we lack some depth? I think so, but it's not as bad as folks think. Look at OSU's snap counts against their 2 toughest opponents. The DE and DT rotation is only 2 deep.

Against good teams, for DE, I expect Bain/Mesidor to have around 50 snaps each and Lightfoot/Blount/Others to have 15-25. DT is the area where we need more rotation and bodies. If Scott averaged 20 snaps per game, I think we'd be in pretty good shape.

As an offense what would you attack on this defense? I would go through the middle pause......like he said without homer glasses they are average/good. He is talking about big time teams that win late playoffs with DT play, that is a spot that depth wise with our eyeballs looks thin so far. Or do we have to say everyone on the team is elite because we are winning? Like he said Blay is just a guy I agree with that, I had no problem with him saying that. He will be drafted as that, unless you taking him in the first round? Since he is one of "the best" in the country. Im just saying
We have the best defensive line in the country. Five games through the season, that is a flat out fact. So if you think a team is going to have success running through the middle of our defensive line, I don’t know what to tell you other than I got some oceanfront property in Arizona for you.

gave me chills when he said #8 ... he looks different
Guarantee there are NFL scouts penciling him in as someone they hope they can steal in the draft.

If Jakobe keeps playing at this level he is going in the 2nd round.

We get a lot smaller subbing Blount in at DT and Lightfoot at DE though. Agree it would be much less of a concern if by the end of the year Simpson is able to play more snaps at DT and Blount is at DE except for 3rd down pass rushing.

Scott and Blount can really take this d line to the next level with continued development. I’ve liked what I’ve seen from 18. 5 has not had as many snaps, but he played decent when he was in. He blew up a reverse and almost had a 5-7 yard TFL. He's explosive but there is more to that in Heathermans defense

Defensive tackle, I’m telling you some of you guys on here are amazing. Freaking amazing! We have arguably the three best defensive tackles in all of college football and they are playing like it on the field and yet you guys still say you’re concerned with it. I’ll never get it with some of you.
Preach! Why is everyone so obsessed with playing musical chairs with our rotations! We have a front loaded schedule. I’m sure it was in our best interests to play vets and shorten who get rotated in. After this bye week we should see more guys but the elite teams aren’t just playing people for the h*ll of it!

Simpson got I think 5 reps last week. This bye week is perfect timing to continue to get him more & more comfortable. The truth about the portal/NIL era is teams have alot less depth then they ever did. Nobody is 3 deep at a position anymore. Young guys have to be ready bc its not the days of having a Junior physically ready guy behind the starter.

yep.

ESPECIALLY along the DL.

I get why we leaned on experience during the gauntlet we had to start the year, but we have to build depth both on defense and offense. I hope we don't wait until the game is out of reach to give guys like Simpson, Russel (if he's healthy), Wiley, Bonner, Pruitt, PIckett, etc. snaps. Don't put them all in at once, but sub them in strategically. Give 1 or 2 of them a series; let them take their lumps. We did that with Blount against Duke last year, and it wasn't pretty, but it's valuable. On offense give Moore, Trader (if he's not on a milk carton), Upshaw, Gilbert, Schott meaningful snaps too. We need more weapons and explosive potential on offense. I think part of the reason we have failed to put teams away on offense is that there's only so many ways Dawson can dress up throwing the ball to Toney and Daniels.

With our resume I think we are still a lock in the playoff if we either:
  • drop 1 regular season game, miss out on ACC Championship game because of a tiebreaker
  • drop 1 regular season game, make the ACC Championship game and lose a competitive game
We don't have to be perfect the rest of the season, though it sure would be cool if we were. Play more guys, get them experience, and build depth.
We need to get some bigger leads so we can get the backups some real reps. We don't need style points from this point on. Just win, and hopefully get the backups some reps, because we'll need them down the stretch and in the playoffs.

I expected us to make the playoff this year, but I didn't have any expectations once we got there. Probably more a hope that we didn't get embarassed. This team is so much better than I thought it could be. I think we're the second best team in the country, and we could be the best team in country if we keep getting better and OSU hits a ceiling. It sure is fun to split hairs again about what we need to do to be in a position to be the best at the end of the year.

Scott played 30 snaps vs fsu

Thomas is absolutely the surprise of the year. He came in as an afterthought bc Haulsy chose LSU. And everybody else that’s playing well has some track record of success. Thomas has never been more than decent. He’s finally found a defense he can thrive in. And man he’s been unbelievable.

If we played Ohio State's schedule, we'd have the same, or better, results.
Imagine Arch Manning week one at Miami....

I don't see OSU as our superior.
