Imo that works in Miami’s favor bc it takes away king’s ability to run (which I think he would have done successfully against us).

I don’t recall max being a deep ball guy either, so that’s 2 phases of the game you have to worry about less.

Max ran better in the spring game than King, if that means anything.

I was just gonna say this. This works in Miami favor because as bad as Haynes been throwing the ball, his run is still something to be considered a threat. With Johnson in the game. I don’t see a pass going over 15 yds throughout the game.

This is from a scouting report I happened to find - looks like their offensive strategy will be dink and dunk.

He isn’t going to win a strongest arm contest, but he can make any throw necessary during the course of a game. On the downside, he has a major case of happy feet. He gets very flustered under pressure and loses control of his throws. He is usually a very accurate passer, but will get too nervous when a team brings extra rushers and it causes him to make bad decisions and throws. He also struggles picking up outside pressure, so will stand in the pocket too long taking a sack. He needs to take better care of the ball, again he just gets so flustered when under pressure that he makes bad decisions and he has too many fumbles when being sacked. He is not a very mobile quarterback either, so defenses do not need to worry about him running.

Meh I wouldn’t count on him using them much. In 2020 he had 54 rushes for 119 yards (6 games); in 2021, 78 for -41. I know sacks count against rushing yds in college, but he definitely toned it down with the legs.

If true, I watched a lot of Max Johnson at LSU. Physically, he's built and has a big frame. But he isn't that gifted of a thrower or athlete. IMO his arm talent is average at best. His best quality is he's tough as ****. He would get destroyed often (part his fault and part his lines fault) and the kid kept coming back. Overall, he's a very average QB who won't single handily beat you. Whether it's him or King, we have the best QB in the game by far.

For the record, if this happens, in August, this is what I had said about Max.

Check down Charlie for sure. He is right up Jimbo’s alley in terms of safe play style. If we can get up on them, then he aint pushing the ball down field aggressively and scaring our safeties at all IMO. But on the other hand if they get ahead and their running game is going, he won’t make mistakes either and it could be difficult to get a TO with him back there. He isn’t a risk taker and lacks arm talent.

The more I’ve thought about it, I tend to agree. From what I saw, Johnson wasn’t super accurate throwing downfield at LSU last year, a lot of shorter passes.

Not to mention he’s not very agile, to put it kindly. Steele has yet to even dial up a blitz, and I feel pretty good about pressuring this guy and getting him to fold.

I almost feel they would have been better off with King, as crazy as that may sound to their fanbase. Now we won’t even have to bother keeping a QB spy.

If I'm TAMU, regardless of QB, this is a route I'm using over and over until we play someone at that spot who's willing to anticipate and close more aggressively. On 3rd and 9 here, from the opposite hash (!), our corner reacted late to the in-breaking route. I suppose protecting against a double move or just delayed instinct. Any halfway accurate college passer hits this route. It's often been free money.
