Max Johnson to start per 247?

Max Johnson is a very average qb, but he has experience. For the most part, Miami has run basic defensive sets. It makes sense considering the first two opponents. I'm assuming Jimbo has concerns that Miami will bring different types of pressure and, with the way their oline struggled, Jimbo thinks King will turnover the ball.

I'm hoping Miami brings pressure with different blitz packages, hard pressing the corners, etc. I'm not overly concerned with Max Johnson beating us deep. If he does, then good on him. But I don't want him to control the game by giving him and his receivers time to find space underneath and move the ball. Punch everyone in the mouth.
I agree.

Starting Max Johnson pretty much tells me that Mr. Flagg is going to be the focal point of their attack and go from there.

Like your thinking. We have been wondering what Gattis has been holding back but no one has mentioned what heat Steele may be sitting on.

Flagg may not be the fastest, but he has positive traits too. I’m more worried about our corners than the LBs, for sure, as crazy as that may have sounded not too long ago..
Yeah but if they trench (edit: stretch) him out and he can’t keep up, we are in trouble.

CB is going to be an issue but I have a sneaking suspicion, based only on my spidy senses that will ball out this game.

I hope you’re right about the corners, honestly! If they get some chunk plays on LBs in coverage, and that turns out to be our biggest defensive problem, I think we come out with the win.

On the other hand, if our corners start getting abused and Johnson can make some of the throws (remains to be seen, he’s very inconsistent throwing downfield), then the game could get ugly pretty **** quickly… quite frankly

I'd actually think King would do more damage against Flagg as King has wheels to get past Flagg almost every play. Johnson can be contained by Flagg. The concern would be matching up Flagg on #6 out of the backfield. I highly doubt Steele would do that. Thus, I have a feeling we will see more zone in this game than in the past two. Force Max to beat us with may short passes and runs.

I completely agree with you.

With Max I see them trying to isolate #6 with Flagg thus forcing Steele’s hand and I think Max could do a better job of staying composed in reading the D and thus coming back to #6 right away vs King taking off and bailing on the pass play.

In the end, I actually Max in the game vs King as he has the potential to hurt us more than Max.

I'd be more concerned with Steed as he would be asked to cover the flats while the Nickle/Star would be asked to do the other flats. If they go 11 personnel, it could end up being James Williams who "spies" #6 with Flagg on the QB.

If Gumbo is making a QB switch this early he has to be getting behind the scenes heat.
Someone shared the press conference he did on Sunday or Monday after losing to Boone State and it seemed to me like he was worried. Speaking a million miles per hour straight nervousness

His players are embarrassing the program by undermining him and acting like fools. He probably feels like a real dumb@ss for the comments he made the week before about never ruling out coaching at home in West Virginia and I doubt his boosters liked it either lol

if they fire him, I believe he is owed the rest of his contract...Which I think is like $70 million?
$85M!!! hahaha

Truthfully, they would come to an agreement that would keep money flowing into his pocket for years (Bobby B day gets replaced with Jimbo Day). He in turn would likely be allowed to find a job without losing the money.

I'm floored that Jimbo pushed last year's QB out. While he wasn't a world better, he was tons better than King. I pray we see King start and play the full game as any other QB is likely better. King is a great HS QB who likely never read a D and played sandlot football.

If I'm TAMU, regardless of QB, this is a route I'm using over and over until we play someone at that spot who's willing to anticipate and close more aggressively. On 3rd and 9 here, from the opposite hash (!), our corner reacted late to the in-breaking route. I suppose protecting against a double move or just delayed instinct. Any halfway accurate college passer hits this route. It's often been free money.
This dude about to give us the opposing qb gets world intro vs. Miami treatment? Mayhaps.

My worry with any of the a&m quarterbacks is that — while they ARE all average — we gave up some pretty big plays to a very below-average armed qb when we played southern miss.
and BC and ....and....and...We ain't got the secondary. Watch: LSU, UNC, Bama redux.

I think he was pressured. And maybe Johnson is an overall better player but if Jimbo thought Johnson gave them a better chance to win games 1-2, he would have started. We will see what happens and maybe this will be some sort of spark for TAM but it doesn’t usually work that way.
You just sealed the fruition of the curse, Atl...
