Mateer in Trouble?

How many times do I watch a sporting event and the announcers put on screen bets and odds? It used to never be seen nor mentioned. I think it's only expected that players will bet, eventually on their own team and will sooner or later throw games. Sports will go through times where their credibility will be at stake. We've been through this before in this country.

That has already happened throughout history, many times................

Very true but with legalized online gaming it's just so much easier and accessible. And you don't have to be in cahoots with mobsters anymore. You can do it yourself (stupid) or have a straw better place a bet on your behalf on 1 of 1000 phone apps and just shave a few points or call an audible at a certain time and bang.. easy money.

Jimmy the Greek did odds before games on CBS back in the 70’s.

And there were allegedly games thrown in the 80’s by QB’s getting big pay days, from a big time Chicago bookmaker.

The Black Sox, Pete Rose, NBA point shaving. It’s been around, but today, you are right. It is all around us 24/7.

Have to draw the line at betting within your sport or the legitimacy will be questioned.

If they find that his bet went through a bookie, then he should be punished. If it was just a bet with a friend, let it be.

Sorry but this has been a huge problem in all sports and especially college. It’s just too easy and there are dudes that thrive on it and have players in their pocket.
When you have any industry that makes billions it attracts a criminal element. From black market ozempic to cigarettes and alcohol.

There are elements in society that seek where they can make a quick buck. In drug smuggling it’s estimated that only 10 percent of loads are discovered and some say that most of that 10 percent is discovered on purpose to distract law enforcement from bigger loads.

Now in gambling there is no benefit to whistleblowing. So more than likely 99.9 percent of illegal gambling is not caught or reported.

Trying to find a way to eliminate it from a team of 100 players is a daunting task. And since most of the teams aren’t playing for any championships, the players can fumble or drop a pass and nobody questions it.

Like who really GAF if Stetson doesn’t cover against Samford?
Or if wake beats the spread against Virginia.

Check out this European soccer player talk about it.

Mannn there ain't nuttin goin on out in the palouse unless you like cow tipping or getting pulled over for 55 in a 50..
Ofc this mfer gambled! 😆

well aware of jimmy the greek segments back in the pregame cbs shows. You can add to the list CCNY and 1951 college basketball. But now you got announcers during the game announcing odds on a current live in time bet then cutting back to the studio analysts to ask them how they would bet. It's never been like how it is now. It's not just it being around 24/7, it's the degree of penetration into the actual sportscast itself and the game itself. And it is all allowed and encouraged by networks and sport commissioners.

we are going to see the destruction of our sports if fans believe they are not legitimate and the greed of the sports leagues and networks is going to make it happen.

This seems like a load of bull****.

How much were these payments? And they were made in 2022? Somebody wants to investigate a couple of friendly wagers on sports games between friends? Games neither person had any involvement in? This doesn’t seem like online sports gambling or walking into a casino and throwing down some money.

This seems a little more than a nobody sports writer, if that’s what you want to call an Internet troll. Why is somebody going through someone’s Venmo transactions from three years ago? Was Mateer under investigation for something else and these payments happened to be noticed? How did all this bull**** start?

What’s next? Someone has their reputation stained because they bet who is picking up the tab while watching a football game at the local bar? Oh no, were they drinking? What were they drinking? Why were they drinking? Were they of legal age to be drinking? Is the bar owned by the mob?

Had a neighbor that played basketball with Billy Packer in High School. Got swept up in gambling scandal while playing at Seton Hall during the 60's.
I found this SI article. Senavitis was my neighbor.

Sad part is you know a handful of NCAA players saw this story break and immediately went to check to ensure their own venmo was private and all descriptions were appropriate lol
After that broke I know half of the UF and FSU fanbase dug through every venmo Carson Beck, Bain, and Francis have ever had. Some are still going I'm sure.

angry employee office destruction GIF
