Maryland coach says facilities largely irrelevant in NIL era

Facilities are important in eliminating negative recruiting, and for building positive perception about ongoing commitment to the program.

But, no, they're not going to be the primary reason for a signing. I don't think this is news.

Strength and conditioning will always play a huge part in physically beating the guy in front of you, mostly in the trenches as we're aware. Facilities aren't important but they definitely need to be sufficient and provide the athlete with as many tools as required to improve in-line with their peers at other universities. That includes proper nutrition and recovery equipment and availability.

"Infrastructure" is still obviously key to the process of getting kids to the next level- which is still the goal of most players even beyond immediate NIL benefits.

But let's be honest too, the facilities shtick was also largely just a tool to negative recruit AND illegally pay players while claiming your indoor slide or video game room and training table was what got all those 5 stars to your school

People aren’t going to teams cause they have cool facilities, but people might not be willing to come play at with ****** facilities after seeing the good ones. It’s more about getting to a place of equal

Maryland is not often recruiting against say...Alabama...where there is such a stark contrast in football facilities and infrastructure...they are going to be - mostly - competing against similar schools with similar infrastructure in place. You just got to look like a professional operation, IMO. Most of these facilities at this level are varying degrees of good and the differentiation between them is minimal when you're zooming out.

But yeah, the most important thing right now for college sports is having your NIL **** together and your boosters should be funneling money into that collective instead of taking their money and trying to invest in more infrastructure. Sure...some of the money needs to go there, but boosters gotta start coughing up bigger checks for both at this point.

All arguments about Maryland are invalid.

They have GERDis, a Broyles Award Winner.

Fear the Turtle *******.

What he said was: "Unfortunately, we moved in at a time when facilities have been de-emphasized in a recruit’s mind. Because they’d get dressed in the trash can for $25,000."

I think it's fair to say that it has been de-emphasized. The rest of his statement is a little too exaggerated though. Facilities will still play a role in a kid's mind because excellent facilities means that money is being poured into the program. If money is being poured into the program, money is likely being poured into NIL too. So I still think that facilities reflect the financial health/wealth of a program and kids will be mindful of that IMO.

Did he really bang a recruit's mom?

Impressive.
Supposedly plural....but I'm beginning to think that might have just been a fabrication by those at Meeeechigan to cover for them hiring a guy that sucked because he had Baga and Pedo State on his resume.
