Marshall Few going to Air Force special ops program.

My last tour in Kandahar I had access to killcams on just about anything in theater. Not trying to glorify war, that's an entirely separate discussion. But Cot **** that Howitzer.

season 2 showtime GIF by Shameless
Back around 2012 they were asking other aircraft Crew Chiefs to cross-train to AC-130 to be a flying Crew Chief. Apparently they also helped on the howitzer. That would be a sick job.

Yeah Buff and 130 will be flying after I die. I have buddies who've worked on just about everything. U-2, B-1, B-2 etc. From all the *****ing I've heard over the years it seems the B-1 and C-5 are two of the biggest pigs in the inventory from a MX standpoint. B-1 is almost impossible to keep in the air and C-5 is a hydraulic nightmare apparently. Sometimes I miss it, mostly the camaraderie but **** standing outside scraping snow off of a 130 in 20° temps, those days are well behind me.
Yeah the B-1 was a beast, but barely flew. Watching one take off at night was pretty nasty though. Those things rattled the whole base.

I definitely miss it too. Like you, I dont really miss 16 hour workdays in 135 degree heat though.

There will be zero mention of this nationally, and probably even very little locally.

But let a walk-on get caught with a dime bag and Mark Emmert will hold an emergency news conference.

I was AF ATC and one of my SOFs was an Warthog jockey. We were at a base with 75-100 jets on the tarmac. He said he could come in as a flight of 2-3...and at the right altitude and AOA and take out all the jets...pretty much skipping rounds. The aircraft are amazing, but the aircrew are really amazing. In fact, the entire military is amazing. All the services are intertwined now...one team one fight! If the civilian world really knew the absolutely amazing things that the military did on a daily basis, they’d be blown away. Thanks to those who continue to keep me free and safe🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

When I worked at P&W during Desert Storm, there was a guy in drafting whose son was an A10 pilot. He told a story of an fighter pilot who parachuted into a valley and was waiting on rescue. One of the A10 pilots decided to circle until rescue arrived. An Iraqi troop truck showed up and headed down into the valley. Brrrrrt. No more truck. The pilot was safely rescued.
The pilot was Steve Phillis, call sign Syph. He was ultimately shot down and KIA. My buddy was his roommate at King Fahd. His roomate at the Academy is trying to get his Silver Star upgraded to the Medal of Honor.

The world has seen no finer and more capable Close Air Support platform* that the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II (aka Warthog).

*apologies to AC-130 Spectre
Call me when an A-10 can 40 rounds within 50 meters of a SEAL team. Yep, needed a danger close call. The J model with 30s must be something. Talk about precision.

And now they have a test bed with directed energy weapons. Orbit outside the threat fan and now we have next level warfare revolution with what, inches CEP accuracy??

I guess warheads on foreheads and pink mist is going to get replaced with "goo be gone".

😂

DE is pretty much checkmate. Optical countermeasures make DE challenging.

Was sitting on top of a crashed 130 at the end of the runway by the gunship ramp in Bagram watching F-15's take off at night. All you could see was the afterburners and it would look like they were going to fly straight into a mountain before going vertical and disappearing through the clouds. So cool. That 130 on the other hand had seen better days.

UAE, figures.

Story I got was they were told to Go Around twice, on the third time he decided he wanted to land. Our planes were adjacent to the runway and we heard it but there were hellacious crosswinds and visibility was ****. Fortunately nobody was seriously injured.

Is the the one where a chunk of RWY was under repair?

No, that was an MC-130 that crashed in Iraq a couple of years after the war started. That was a ****-up of epic proportions. The one in the pic I posted was 10-ish years ago, I can't remember, all the deployments kind of run together.

Oops.
