Markel Bell vs Florida

I’ve said since the offseason…Bell is Mirabels crown draft jewel. He has to turn him into a top 40 pick for the “I’m the best OL coach in the country” label to be certified..Hes got all the tools and he’s a freak physique wise. Total freak. If Mirabel can’t get him in the top 40 of this years draft then we really phucked this up.

He had a VERY rough game... not only the bad snaps that did make it, I think he accounted for 4 pre-snap penalties. In a game where Beck was not on those penalties kill us because it throws us behind the stick and we cant rely on 4 yrds and a cloud of dust to get us into a manageable situation. Offense is very much about keeping on pace. Lets also remember UF was down like 7 starters on D and the DL was hit the hardest by injuries, we were playing their B squad and too many gaps and missed assignments. Overall I felt like it was good coach tape and not a glaring talent or scheme issue like last year.

But by way of example look at this play on third and long to start the 4th quarter when the game was still close score wise:

showing pressure 5 man front, 2 high safety

guy over Coop/RG fell back, only rushing 4. Coop is lost looking for someone to hit, left side stunted and Brock did a poor job passing off his guy to samson who gets beat and Brock is about to get beat, we had 6 guys blocking 4 and they got home in 3 seconds, only reason that is important is look at CJ/Lofton route combo on the right, CJ is about to be wide open because the safety and CB both take Lofton in the flat:

Look at CJ in the top right corner. Another half a second he is walking in for a 70 yard score, instead we punted and gave them another chance to take the lead.
Really blows a hole in a lot of criticisms of our downfield passing play calls

My goodness Dawson must have wanted to throw up

Should we bump those threads where people were downplaying how good Mirabel and Cristobal are at o line development/recruiting last year 👀
If we are changing the discussion altogether then sure. The conversation was about blind faith bestowed upon ____ 3* recruit. Nothing has changed in that regard.

I hate to see these guys go, but we desperately need to reload the NFL again. Will give me a reason to watch games on Sunday and will do wonders for recruiting

You would certainly know better than me my friend

I will say I’ve not been too big on Bell but to my eyes that was maybe his best game as a Miami Hurricane on Saturday

Samson against ND was a revelation

Just an amazing group that might just keep getting better if that left side continues to improve
@OrangeBowlMagic had me take another look. Our RB chipped the DE back across Francis, so it certainly wasn’t all on Cici.

Bell has really improved. That’s a credit to Mirabal and Cristobal. Just is. He looks light years better.

Pancake makes me smile. I saw him after the Cal game last year walking to the bus. If I was a betting man, my money would’ve been on him portaling out. I’m so glad I was wrong. I think he’s going to play on Sundays for a long time.

I’ve said this probably a bajillion times by now but a buddy of mine used to coach OL and made the NFL. I asked him about Bell when we signed him. He was like 2024 he shouldn’t play but 2025 that kid might be a monster

Took some lumps last year but trending nicely

There was one play, I think in the first half, that Bell got to the second level and completely engulfed one of their DBs. Like watching one of those reels of the way oversized kid playing youth FB LoL

I might’ve been wrong. Felt like last year we were better off with Rivers at LT. Bell was too stiff at times imo and I wasn’t sure how much he could improve that area against guys smaller, faster with low centers of gravity. But he’s done better so far

We were better of with Rivers at LT - last year. But Bell looks significantly better this year. ****, he looks better than he did a couple weeks ago. He still worries me a bit in pass blocking as he's just not that quick. But in run blocking, he's a beast.

If you want something or someone to complain about, you could look at Mauigoa's pass protection. He gave up the only sack (pause) Saturday night. Yes, St. Francis of the Roadgrade is fallible. Now, this doesn't mean he's not a first rounder, but it is factually true that his pass blocking isn't at the same level his run blocking is.

Samson has played VERY well this year. Better than Bell? I'm not sure it's possible to say given that Samson doesn't get much/any reps at LT. If Samson sticks around another year (or two), he will be the LT and will be a first round pick. I think he's been way better than McCoy thus far, but tha's not to say McCoy has been bad.

Cooper is just fun to watch. He loves kicking azs and talking smack. Brockermeyer is fine. He just needs to stop having ticks and seizures before he snaps the ball.
the sack that he gave up was because the rb who chipped the end catapauolted the end back to the inside where the kid kept his balance....if you really watched the play Mauigoa really would of had him walled off in pass pro if not for the chip. Gave that end props for keeping balance n using a motor. But he really didnt beat the big dog.

Hot Take!!!!! The starting OL will all take an NFL snap one day..
Not sure McCoy does but Samson will if healthy. Brock will be the 3rd center we get to the NFL. Coaches clearly have an eye for center talent. Now can we recruit one from HS that develops? SJ is tiny, can he add 30-40lbs or will he be the next KC Jones(under sized but the motor and mind to kill bigger DT).
