Mark Whipple Suspended For A Game After Saying Ohio Defense 'Raped Us'

Then we should also expect people at a university to be able to read for comprehension and understand context.

The context was that he felt the refs made bad calls. So the only phrase he could come up with to express that was “they raped us.” Sorry Mark, the press isn’t a message board. Have some common sense. Join the world of grown ups and the institute that pays you large sums of money will expect more professionalism out of your mouth when you represent them.

If you’re employed by an educational university, I’d guess they expect you to have better figures of speech in your vocabulary

Rest assured if this was a coach attacking anything right leaning (with much harsher talk) it would have been ignored, applauded or re-affirmed. Selective outrage. Not to get political.. but let's be real here.

Should have just fired him IMO. Missed opportunity. Man they suck.

Are you inferring that the press represents the world of grown ups? Just curious. Odd example iyam.

Didn’t mean to tie that to the press. Speaking with professionalism at work was the adult world. I’ll say things on here that I won’t say at work. It’s not being fake, it’s just wisdom. (However, I usually don’t even speak too crazy on here)

Fair enough. I agree with all that. Just feel like it should have merited a fine, not suspension (first offense).

Dumb choice of words in today's society regardless. Guess he was chunking it deep on metaphors.

Always funny when the “it’s only a figure of speech” “world is getting too pc” “censorship” crowd starts talking about freedom of speech, but when Kellen Winslow, Jr let the world know he didn’t “…give a (he bleeped himself) … I’m a soldier!” it sure wasn’t treated like freedom of speech. And he certainly wasn’t defended. And had it been a kid from another university many on this board would regard his speech as offensive. Because what’s really wrong with anybody saying, “I’m a soldier!”

My only problem is that is came off simply as a tantrum, nothing more. To each his own.

Reading for comprehension AND context. "According to Matt Vautour of MassLive, the coach said the Ohio defense "raped us" while complaining about the officials." Being a grown up means understanding both of those and not letting your emotions get out of hand over a phrase. Sorry if your parents failed to show you how to control your emotions. No one else needs to do it for you. Perhaps a therapist can help you with that. Furthermore, people like you that use your emotions to silence opinions you disagree is the continued destruction of dialogue and critical thinking in our society.

I have zero emotional ties to this story or his statement. But I’m grown enough to know that others might. That’s why I’m at work today and not suspended though.

Your response is indicative of someone that is speaking out of emotion and outrage and not critical thinking. The rest of your response is just a weak attempt at self righteousness but indicative of a narrow mind afraid of critical thinking.

So I can put you down on the side that feels there is absolutely no problem to declare, “I’m a soldier!” if you’ve never been in the military?

Going to war (or battle) is one of the best analogies for a football game. Plenty of buddies have told me only serving/war itself has a greater sense of camaraderie. Obviously the stakes are different but it's a figure of speech.

Yes but in the months and even years following 9/11 that phrase became very taboo. I remember when saying "we're going to war" or "I'm a soldier" in reference to a football game was considered insulting to actual soldiers.

It's hyperbole for most.. but perhaps the tough guy approach (like K2) comes off as insulting. I know military guys are as big of football fans as any. They just want to watch the game they love & maybe be shown a little appreciation.

The problem I had with that situation was that football players and coaches spoke like that all the time in interviews. They constantly referred to football as warfare and nobody thought anything of it until KW said it. Then it was suddenly a problem and he should have known better.

This thing with Whipple is a little different. It should have been obvious to everybody that as a man, saying you got raped in reference to something other than having been made to perform unwanted *** acts might be seen as belittling to people who have been actually raped. Agree or not, you have to be able to see that it could be taken badly, especially at a time where sexual assault is being discussed everywhere all the time.

This isn't about agreeing with what he said or not, or if he meant to belittle sexual assault victims (I think we all know he didn't). It's about his responsibility to represent his employer in a way that they have determined is correct. If I go to work for the catholic church, I won't be able to make facebook posts about all the abortions I'm always getting. If I work for the government, I can't be making FB posts about overthrowing the government. WHEN YOU ACCEPT A JOB YOU LOSE SOME OF YOUR RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH IN SOME SITUATIONS.

It's simple fcking logic, stop acting like he's not allowed to have opinions or like he's been convicted of a crime.

Bombs, trenches, blitzes are all part of football lingo and taken from warfare. By the way our new qb also has a rifle arm, the ball comes out as if shot from a cannon.

I agree with you completely about employment limits. I was only pointing out the hypocrisy of the “it’s a figure of speech” crowd. Many of the people complaining about “freedom…” and “PC...” “liberal …” are the same ones who would lose their mind if someone used “I’m a soldier!” as a figure of speech.

Whipple’s comments were stupid; he should’ve known better and I have no problem with his suspension.

I don't think it was worth a suspension, but he should absolutely know better, PR is part of your job as a HC.

You're right, a lot of how people feel about this has to do with if they're personally bothered by his comment. For some reason it's hard for people to get that it doesn't matter if you're saying "raped" or bashing the NRA or the president, or saying women are inferior. Whatever organization you work for doesn't want people hearing your personal views while you represent them.

If you would actually read and understand what I am trying to say instead of instantly giving me a "dislike" you would find that we are on the same page on a lot of things.
However, the Winslow interview was over the top and enters into another realm. I tried to overlook it because he's a Cane but the NCAA and the NFL both don't want football to end up being a vicious street fight or "war" resulting in injury of different types by letting players act out hate and violence on opposing players... almost resembling gladiators in a Roman colosseum. Actually I don't think that Winslow really meant literally what he was saying, but got caught up in the moment.

Politically correct biggest one of the biggest diseases this country. I spent 26 years in the military and loved what Winslow said. Vince Lombardi used military terminology constantly. He would probably be fired with all the pusses in this country now

So the right supports rape, got it!

Also, name the last time a coach used the term rape because something didn't go His way?...you know what, don't bother, it's never happened.
