If I remember correctly he liked to air the ball out which with the now departed JT would have been great. We still have some speed left to throw long but it seems like they are unable to catch it when thrown to.

As an independenUMASS played an interesting schedule. They played at least two SEC teams a year and seemed to always put at least 20 points on the board. Had some other high scoring games.

With Whipple at OC this year we would've been a playoff team. Nkosi would thrive in WhippleBall. Not necessarily because Whip is amazing, but because anyone is better than having a terd for an OC. Not a figurative terd, an actual terd, calling plays. That is what we had this year.

Whipple is a good QB coach, but not a good offensive coordinator.

He probably got as much out of Jacory Harris as anybody could have. Unfortunately, the RBs, oline and wide receivers all sucked with him as coordinator.

I actually attended a Massachusetts game a few weeks ago...at Connecticut the day after our debacle at Boston College.

Very familiar. Creative designs springing receivers free on deep balls into single coverage. One of those plays connected and completely changed the game in the middle of the 4th quarter. Massachusetts pulled it out by 5 after trailing the entirety.

Game was played in wild weather conditions -- a sideways Nor'easter -- and consequently both teams were forced to play it very close to the vest. Game ended in less than 3 hours. Massachusetts threw it only 15 times.

The defense was absolutely dreadful. I could see that despite the conditions and level of opponent. Connecticut broke a very long game on the first possession and dictated the line of scrimmage throughout. Massachusetts has allowed more than 200 yards rushing in all but two games.

Kind of a strange season to force Whipple out, given that his pass offense was better than ever since regaining the head coaching job in 2014, averaging 8.7 YPA despite two senior quarterbacks in the awkward situation of splitting time for most of the season. That defense was so inept the offense simply couldn't overcome it.

Mark Whipple!!!! Another guy we were all fired up to get and another let down. While we are at why don't we hire Dan Werner or Gary Stevens again. We need Kendall Briles enough said.

Whipple created far more dangerous designs than Fisch but the interception rate was atrocious. So many plays unfolded beautifully and looked like touchdowns only for the Jacory floater to be picked off.

Once Fisch showed up we resorted to the scared V offense. Not enough risk over the middle in deference to safer sideline throws. Drove me nuts, even if the interception rate went down. We still haven't completely shaken that tendency to be too scared of centerfield.

I hate to be the caulksucker that agrees with this douche canoe but he's right.

If Whip had any QB with even an average deep ball arm at :neonu: he would have beasted when he was here.

His offensive concepts are magical.

Haha. Tom Olivadotti to replace Manny?

No. This guy was another stubborn cucksucker. He had a stable of running backs and all he could do was chuck it deep with a guy who had no arm strength.

Whipple is another guy who's a legend in his own mind.

I still shake my head at his gameplan @ OSU* when he completely abandoned the run despite Berry gashing them behind Orlando Franklin.

Far more talent to work with now than when he was here the first time.

Actually, Gary Stevens was very effective running the Schnellenberger offense after Howard left. It was essential to winning the '87 NC and brought us close on at least two other occasions. I would not say bring him back now because it would be like Richt--running a scheme that time has passed by.
