Mario's absurd call late in 1st half

I understood going for the FG; however, I had little faith we would make it. Tough decision either way. Our offense was horrendous in the first half. Can’t put yourself in that position.

I'd say usually it's bad, but against Indy in short yardage is **** near impossible…And in a slugfest game I think it's closer to a decision or just slightly bad…It's probably still the wrong move with Davis being a decent but not great kicker, he's probably what…60-65% to make that kick?

It's a tough call either way though.

Absolutely not absurd, there’s no guarantee we score a TD or a possible turnover that changes the momentum. Also if we don’t get the first down, the confidence it would’ve gave Indiana would’ve possibly ended the game if they got 3 or 7 more before the half.

Not to mention if we make that make able kick that Fletcher TD ties the game early in the 3Q with a full half to play.

The entire 2H we were 1 punch behind on every move despite outplaying them while Indiana still had the lead. If we make that kick then score we would’ve had all the momentum in a tie game with all the pressure on Indiana.

But we didnt decide " hey, lets let IU block a punt", It was play that happened. And once again, retracting "absurd". I amend it to wrong. I wont even say conservative. I like conservative. I though this decision was at the time was almost defeatist.

Yeah but one player on a no effort play caused it to happen. Didnt even slow the guy down.

Whereas the FG, our guy dinged it off the pylon.

We needed points on the board. Obviously he doinked it but needed something there. With that said I wanted us to go for it as there was time. But I see both sides. Not absurd

Nah was trying to break the ice when we needed to break the ice with some points on the board to go into half saying 1 score game…

Carter sadly really was shaky in the playoffs…

Under this logic then NO call can ever be questioned when it fails because, well, people would have criticized the other option too. Nothing then is subject to criticism.
Nah it’s just I find it amusing how often fans with little to no game management experience try to critique calls. Everyone manages the clock on madden so it’s gotta be a layup. Not that it matters. Yall will critique everything anyway 😂

It was a mistake. Said it before the game as well:

I don't think it's worth dwelling on too long though. We should have a better FG kicking situation next year.

I think you had to be aggressive there and give some juice to the team heading into half time. Just too low % of a kick to be worth it to me. But I get it

I personally think if you go for it in your own territory on 4th then you’re all in. I wanted us to go for it.

But I’m not gonna act like it was some horrible decision either
Weird we went for it deep in our own territory but not in plus position with a kicker who been shaky in playoffs.. Was solid prior but he got in his head after AM. 50 yard fg are tough to begin with, having a shaky kicker try that was not best move.

specials KILLED us this game. Terrible, missed kicks, multiple penalties, fielding punt at 3, and the bauman block.

As I posted in the gameday thread, college kickers don't make 50 yard FGs in title games.

I thought it was a terrible, overly conservative call to kick it there.

Sometimes I wonder if people start these topics for engagement, or do they really believe this stuff.

We weren't moving the ball on them all half....and you have an opportunity to get some momentum and a moral victory by putting points on the board. The conversation hits different at half with some points. It's a 50 yard field goal. Most good D1 kickers should be able to hit that. And yes if he failed to pick up the 1st....most on here would crucify him.

Say you disagreed with the call.....dont reach with the "absurd" tag.

it was conservative, but we werent really getting push on the line up front and our passing game was nonexistent.

our kicker was *** to end of the year. idk how you trust the **** to kick a 50 yarder

I disagree. Absurd is a stretch, and it obviously wasn’t fatal since we made much more critical errors (punt block most notably) and we still had the ball going in to win the game.

I can definitely see the argument for going for it, no problem there. But I see an argument for kicking, too. We just put up an absolute stinker of a half against a team expected to kick our teeth in. We had zero momentum. If we make it 10-3 right there, it’s a huge win going into half. I’d have taken 10-3 all day. Would’ve been great energy in the locker room to play that ****** on offense against that team on that stage and it’s a one-score game.

And 2 yards felt like 15 the way we were playing.

Hindsight helps, but I don’t hate the call. We had much bigger problems.
Yeah, I understand why we tried it. Going for it on 4th and 2 doesn't guarantee we get 7. I'm not sure what I would have done. I probably would have gone for it, I hate 50 yard FGs as a general rule unless I need one to win a game.
