Mario on Joe Rose: Hear a fake tough guy tell you to work hard

I don’t think he finishes the contract either, but you’re dead wrong about the $ not drying up.

I’ll be here a few years from now watching people cry about the lack of resources the new coach has while Miami catches deep and soothing penetration on the recruiting and transfer portal rail trail.

This is the last shot for this school in this new environment. Miami and USC are ****ering on permanent irrelevance.
You don't think those same guys are investing because they want a championship at Miami?

Granted, their leashes/tolerance are probably longer than most of the fans.

But if we're 7 years in and Mario still hasn't won the ACC or a playoff berth and the Ad/president is ready for a change, obviously the rich boosters (Mas brothers and others) will have to be involved. You think they'll say to the school "nope you can't can't fire Mario or we won't invest anymore"?

At some point they'll also realize he's not the guy and if they want a championship at Miami, they'll need to make the same investment in somebody else and give them a chance.

Or do you think they don't care that much about bringing a championship back to Miami and really they just wanted to see Mario do it?

Mario works as hard as any coach in America and is relentless. He’s just not too smart . That’s why his hires are important but even with that it takes 4-5 times to get it right . Which leads you back to the not too smart comment
@Cribby Mario is at best a position coach. He isn't a coordinator and **** sure not a head coach. When he leaves Miami he will likely be a position coach and never a hc again. Mario might be on his third oc in four years and is on his 3rd DC in four years. That's like being on your sixth marriage in eight years. Now if I told you I'm on my sixth wife in eight years you would call me crazy and stupid.

The worst part of that interview is he said they didn’t go for the win at the end of regulation bc they “didn’t pop a big return.”

Yea bc Marion didn’t even return the ******* kick. So did the AA kick returner make that decision himself, or did someone tell him not to return it? Why didn’t they say no matter what take it out and try to break one? Why was this not followed up on? Does Mario not even care to explain or does he just not know? Incompetent and embarrassing.
I saw Mario talk to Marion right before the kick. I assumed he told him not to return it to save time and just start at the 25. The only other thing he could say is “take it to the house” no matter how deep in the endzone. I guess I was wrong.

What did he say lol

Whatever he told him was wrong bc Marion didn’t even think twice about letting it drop

Has anyone ever directly asked Mario how to reconcile the "tough/man" talk with consistently turtling up to the "most risk averse" decisions (even literal formations) when the pressure rises? I think those two realities contradict. But, who knows how he views it. I'd be fascinated by that response.
Listening to Mario, he is not coaching, he is just reading the analytics and making his decisions of the analytics. ****, we can just get a robot, with AI to do that.

A phrase I keep using in recent post - "I've said this in another post", this one weeks ago though, and believe it was regarding the defense...and somewhat to your point, I mentioned, if this team continues to IMPROVE as the season goes on, etc etc. - Have we witnessed a Mario team improve as the season went on? Or add new wrinkles? Opposing teams just need to watch a couple of games and know all our tendencies.
I am waiting for an opposing team player to say, we never saw that on film

Is that the old white dude he talks to on the sideline a lot? Is that his analytics guy? There’s a place for analytics but more than that, there’s a place for a feel of the game, momentum, etc
Woof

i was listening on the podcast while driving and almost swerved off road when mario says he coaches a disciplined team
Penalty ranked under Mario as HC @ P4 level:
2018 - 30th
2019 - 63rd
2020 - 60th
2021 - 112th
2022 - 109th
2023 - 71st
2024 - 95th
2025 - 128th

I’m not sure what Mario thinks is disciplined, but his track record shows this couldn’t be further from the truth. There’s one instance that went semi viral that gave Mario this undue credit, & it was several yrs back while at UO. Even though UO was up big, one of his players had an Unsportsmanlike penalty, & Mario can be seen meeting him on the field w the cameras on him yelling “U can’t do that.”

Thus, the legend of “Mario, The Disciplinarian” was born.

I would hope he knows the smart play was not to run it out b/c, u know, time conservation & all?

Im glad someone pointed this out too.

He's constantly referencing the "spreadsheet" and analytics.

Has no clue how the game is actually going or what to do in which situations. No feel for anything.

Just get a robot to do that.

Damning metrics.
