Mario on joe rose 7/15 on Qb Room - NO portal

It's the typical posters doing mental gymnastics. There is zero benefit in Mario not publicly declaring that the answers to our future QB questions are not in the room. If he says otherwise, you're going to have the younger guys looking over their shoulders throughout the fall.

Maybe some artful smoke screening on his part- so many variables- but he’s got the #1 QB coming here and he’s not official until early December
If he SAID otherwise, Izzy Abram’s might up & de-commit….

Who told you that last year? It was almost universally considered a very thin top tier class. This year is a different story. Manning, Moore, Sayin, Mestemaker, Sellers, Carr, Maiava, Chambliss, et al. The top tier of the ‘27 class looks to be markedly deeper than ‘26 was or ‘28 projects to be.

Joe Rose asked him about the transfer portal in general versus recruiting. Mario gave his fairly standard answer.

But unsolicited in that answer he said but “for example, for us, like we finally feel that our QB room and it’s supporting cast is ready to roll- so at this time next year we don’t have to go to the portal. We are good with our high school recruits and the way they are developing and what’s coming in.”

Joe did not ask him about quarterbacks whatsoever it was just about his philosophy, and Mario saying yes, we rely on recruiting overall and the portals about a specific team to fill in the gaps

I thought that was a pretty definitive statement. I guess we shall see, but I thought you guys might want to go to town on it one way or the other.

In his ACC podium speech, Mario added disclaimer at end of portal QB question "Every single year is different, even though our foundation is the high school player, we are never going to deny ourselves the opportunity to get better as a program if there is a player we can pick up in portal"

Add that asterisk to your post..

We don’t even know who our third out of conference opponent is yet lol.

He just knows there is a massive recruiting cost to taking portal quarterbacks four years in a row compared to three years especially when our main commit in 2023 (Rashada) never enrolled while our 2023/2024 commits weren’t high-profile, Emory & Judd, and we missed on high-profile guys who most likely would’ve been ready to play by now (Raiola, Nico Iamavela, Air Noland).

We now have the room strong enough that it is ready to compete. Nickel/Judd/Coleman will battle it out. Abrams cannot enroll early from his high-school. If he’s able to win the job without spring practice, more power to him but if we’re being realistic that’s just not going to happen.

This time last year, all the "draft experts" were hyping up the 2026 class. Sellers, Nussmier, Aller, Klubnik, and Arch were the talk of the town. Go back and listen to some of the episodes of the show McShay does with Steve Muench. Before the 2025 season, they were drooling about how deep that class was supposed to be. Again, look how that turned out

I legitimately laughed out loud at work reading some of the names you just mentioned for the 27 class. First off, there isn't a single QB you mentioned that is better than Mensah. Sellers is so garbage it's not even funny. A left-handed Mensah is better than Moore and Sayin. I actually like Mestemeker, but he chose to go to Ok State, who is one of the worst Power 4 programs

Mensah came to Miami because he knew he'd put up huge numbers with this scheme and WRs, and he wants to do all of that to position himself as a first-rounder. His mindset is probably to only be here one year and move on

But that's just the thing. He didn't have to say anything because no one asked him! Not once did Joe ask him about quarterbacks.
 
They asked him at the ACC presser and he reiterated what he said on Joe Rose: he feels the room is strong enough from a HS standpoint that there is no need to take a portal quarterback.

This is in line with what Dawson said earlier this year about that internal development is going to matter again really soon aka Mensah would be the last starting portal qb we’ll go get.

I’m sure we have a clue how good Luke and Coleman are.. and that’s good enough to be a starting qb at Miami after this season. We are recruiting elite QBs out of high school for that reason.

Only 6 months ago, we paid an absolute fortune just to get Mensah, and showed how desperate we were for a portal QB. Did the staff's opinion of the QB room really change that quickly? December is a long way away, so maybe Nickel or Coleman could show enough throughout the course of the season. Personally, my guess would be that if we do decide not to go with a portal QB, that means Abrams probably got the nod. That's not a knock on the other two

The reason I'm not looking too hard into this statement is that with our offensive line, scheme, WR core and NIL, the top portal QBs will be knocking on the door. There is going to be a lot of interest

My point was that last year, we gassed up all these QBs before the season (Aller, Klubnick, Nussmier, Sellers, Manning), and it turned out to be a weak QB class. When you look at some of those names on that list, I think it's way too early to be saying this is a stacked QB class

My other point was that everyone on the board should be rooting for Mensah to be one-and-done here. It means we had the season we expected to have. I don't know if Mensah came here with the plan to stick around for two years. He knows what a season at Miami can do for his draft stock

I agree with this and I wasn't even saying that it's one way or another. Personally, it would make sense for Mensah to leave after this season barring injury and assuming he does leave then I think we need to hit the portal.

I’m gonna say number one, you don’t know that and I’m gonna say number two, he won’t be weighing 180 pounds over a year from now. And I’m gonna say number three, you are purely guessing here. This kid is arguably the most talented quarterback to ever commit to our university out of high school, that is a fact and he very well could start for us next year. He has all the tools. And again, let me repeat, he won’t be weighing 180 pounds over a year from now.

Hopefully all this means is the young arms have at least taken a clear step collectively. But big difference between a step and being unquestioned QB1 at Miami (at least it should be). If Abrams, Coleman, Nickel, or Judd can show the mental intangibles most clearly then we have reason to ride with someone young. Just gotta trust Mario + Dawson's judgment
 
He wants to keep up the confidence of the young QBs in the room up and doesn't want any of them to transfer so of course he's gonna say this. If he thinks we need a QB1 in December, we'll get one from the portal.

They have to go with the guys on the roster in 2027. You will have 4 qbs who were all recruited by dawson. 3 of the 4 will have at least 2 years or more in his system. Makes the staff recruiting, evaluations, and develop look bad if they don’t let there own guys compete
