I know there is an ACC media days thread, but I thought this was a big enough statement that it needed its own breakout.

Joe Rose asked him about the transfer portal in general versus recruiting. Mario gave his fairly standard answer.

But unsolicited in that answer he said but “for example, for us, like we finally feel that our QB room and it’s supporting cast is ready to roll- so at this time next year we don’t have to go to the portal. We are good with our high school recruits and the way they are developing and what’s coming in.”

Joe did not ask him about quarterbacks whatsoever it was just about his philosophy, and Mario saying yes, we rely on recruiting overall and the portals about a specific team to fill in the gaps

I thought that was a pretty definitive statement. I guess we shall see, but I thought you guys might want to go to town on it one way or the other.

Probably sees how weak our schedule is next year and figures we can win with anyone, even if it’s the freshman Abram’s.

Mensah has two years of eligibility left. We all anticipate he will thrive in this offense with Dawson and will go pro, but this is also a very QB-rich draft; Arch continues to be overrated without showing much. Could there be even a small chance he comes back to be a Heisman front runner and #1 pick favorite for 2028?

Completely agree with you. If Mensah decides to stay for 1 more year and take the $5 million NIL, that would set our QB situation up perfectly for the next ~5 years.

It’s gonna be very interesting to see. We have the offense capable of smoking a good number of teams on our schedule. Has the mentality completely changed, and are we finally ready to put the hammer down on people and stop being friendly?

All depends if November 2025 Mario is here to stay or he reverts back to playing it safe with a lead. Gotta’ think/hope he saw the difference last year and with that playoff run and knows this is his most complete team he’s had. That taste of the title game last year has to be bugging him.
 
this statement is subject to change based on how the season plays out.

factors include
-if mensah leaves, we assume he probably will
-how the qb room looks throughout camp and the season
-if a high quality upgrade becomes available in the portal during the window at the conclusion of the year

Montini plays a few tough opponents this year so we shall see. I wish they were playing Mt Carmel in conference who is the best team in the state and probably nationally ranked.
