Mario on Gattis / Staff

Oregon scores 37 per game this year against Power 5. Last year they scored 30. Insane “transformation”.

The point I was making to Mr Ghandi is that our offense sucks *** because of the playcaller and offensive teachers, not because Mario wants to run an archaic scheme. The stats over 4 years at Oregon just don’t back up that theory.

Kenny Dillingham makes a $1mm at Oregon

Miami paying Gattis $1.8mm is the salt in the wound. I can think of 10 OC’s I’d pay similar money to and force them to come to Miami as it would be a 50% bump in pay

I can think of 10 non-Air Raid OCs you can pay half of that money to and we’d double our offensive output.

Most teams pass to setup the run… which is done by spacing and creating a numbers advantage for your offense…. Gattis was worse than dogsh!t at this

Even if we went with an air raid OC, our running game would improve

Mario is trying to lure a WR coach. The fact that Gattis also coaches WR’s is somewhat telling to where he stands. Mario will swing and miss but the guy certainly swings for the fences

Who brought him in
Sure. You can certainly criticize Mario for the QB room. Recruiting and projecting QBs is arguably the hardest task in all of CFB yet the one most reflective of what kind of squad you'll have. Get lucky (or good) and you get Clemson's run. Get misses and you look like Jimbo post-Jameis or DJ Ui[whatever].

to me, its that lanning didnt find any of the QBs useful and went out and got a not so good QB at AU. it wasnt like bo nix was caleb williams or even tvd last year. thats on the OC imo and the person who picks the oC is mario. he didnt recruit herbert. he didnt bring in anyone after herbert which you could argue is a red flag on its own considering you just had a QB go in the top 10 of the draft. thats an easy recruiting tool and its not like oregon is duke where you sitll wont land a top tier QB out of HS even after you had DJ go in the top 10

ill give this to marios building. he didnt intend to have his OC be a WR coach. he didnt know B Mac would pull the same move mario did to golden years ago. it appears that his QBC would be the play calling oC initially. now, whether that was gonna be ponce is a red flag on its own. we could do better.

Ehhh, I dunno boss.

I’m looking at Ponce’s tenure as a QBC. He’s produced a lot of sub 2500 yrd QBs (on avg.) His QBs r producing at a TD:int rate of 2.5:1. His best season as a QBC came in 2021 w/ Brice; but, even though Bruce was his first QB to throw for over 2,700 yrds, he threw 11 ints compared to 27 TDs.

That brings us to 2022; all of our QBs under his tutelage have become turnover machines. Ppl wanna complain about MTSU, & I suggest u go look at how **** poor those ints were that TVD started the game w.

This seem to be a trait of whatever he’s teaching, & furthermore, his passing offense is very dink & dunk which is y he went right back to App St after his failure at UL.
i said this when we were hiring OCs

No Coley
No Ponce

Lol y'all have all the answers huh? Boy this site might literally shut down if it's announced Gattis will be returning next season. These next few months are going to be HILARIOUS

I'm not sure what you're trying to say?

Anyways, here's my take. I try to call it down the middle. This board gets too extreme. You have a faction that may be too protective of Mario (although that's since been eroded) and a faction that's too critical. Here's what I think:

1. Mario's run with Herbert was a FAIL. Now, precise reasons why? I don't know. Was it OC? A bad OL? Did Herbert get fantastic coaching with the Chargers and simply mature/flourish? I really don't know. Didn't watch much Oregon football. But I'll just drop this as an L on his lap.
2. Mario failed to recruit capable QBs and had to bring in Anthony Brown who was super limited. We all saw Brown at BC. Game manager QB at best. Not a passer. Again, here, Mario gets an L for bad recruiting.
3. The actual Oregon offense with Brown . . . I can't put this on Mario. Brown was super limited. What they got out of him and out of that offense IMO is similar to what any other OC or HC would have gotten out of Brown.
4. Hired Gattis. Fail.
5. The offense this year . . . I tend to put this more on Gattis than Mario. I think Gattis sold Mario a false bill of goods. I don't think Gattis is competent.

So, we all want to say Mario is physical, conservative, etc. The truth is likely somewhere in the middle. We saw for example the UNC game. Threw the ball 57 times for 496 yards. RBs got a total of 18 carries. At a minimum, that suggests to me he is not entirely inflexible or unwilling to bend his preference when the situation calls for it.

We need to stop with "We need to run/pass the ball" and go with "We run what works well" as a team in the future.
Being one dimensional isn’t going to work vs. anyone with a pulse.
