Mario will succeed here if he can put 2-3 really strong recruiting classes together (not good but great recruiting classes). He needs to get a stout OL in place to run his preferred offense. It will take some time (at least a couple of full recruiting cycles plus some maturation of those recruits). He will succeed here, if he can do that. JR & others will be absolutely critical to the process. It will take Mario time but he's trying to build a solid foundation that will last.
In the interim, the offense should be last year's passing game PLUS 5-10 much better run plays where they rep the heck out of the blocking schemes (even if there's little-to-no contact in practice & it's done in slo mo). The offense has to be geared now to the players you have. It would be a major error to force a scheme on them that they just can't execute (especially now with a depleted OL). We can be a more balanced offense (including a power run game) in 2-3 years (assuming OL recruiting remains very stout).
In the interim, the results on the field need to be better. That starts with the play of the depleted OL. Mario, Mirabal and the RB coach have got to figure out ways to protect the QB or things will go from bad to worse. All players on offense need to protect the QB or we won't have any QBs left. I've always disagreed with the notion that Mallory & others shouldn't have to block. Thats how your QB gets hurt. With the brutal turnstile performance of the OL at the end of the Duke game, it's now not enough to just rely primarily on the OL to protect Jake. All of the TEs and the RBs need to protect the heck out of Jake to keep him healthy & give him a chance (same with Jacurri when he's in). Things will only improve if there's a cohesive effort by all of the offensive coaches to protect the QB.
It will likely take Mario 3 years to get us back to being a highly competitive team. He will need time & the support of the fans. We have every right to be disappointed in the W-L record this year. Coaches need to do better...much better. However, calling for Mario to be fired in Year 1 is premature, an emotional response and shows a lack of understanding that he will need to recruit his way (over 2-3 years) to better performance.
