Mario Cristobal

Oregon is currently second in the nation in pass defense, allowing only 4.8 YPA. That is a fantastic number and the TD/Interception ratio is borderline surreal at 3-12.

We'll see how it holds up over the next month or so. But any type of significant improvement in that vital category is normally a sign of a program and coaching staff that knows what it is doing.

It is so simple to make big strides these days in college football by playing basic physical football and legitimately contesting every play. That's because the rest of the nation wants to play cupcake football. Heck, you see it here in at least a dozen threads every day: We want to be cupcakes. Desperate for that cupcake offense. Wisconsin is first at 4.1 YPA for the same basic football reason, vastly outplaying its talent level. Two or three decades ago a Wisconsin could never reach this level. There were far fewer cupcake teams and dozens more truly rugged teams.

The big programs that do have elite talent and also prioritize pass defense are taking their rightful and logical position at the top:

Ohio State 5.2 YPA
Clemson 5.3 YPA
Alabama 5.7 YPA

There's no question Oregon blew the Stanford game last season. I was watching and laughing at the strategic stupidity. There are actually at least a dozen more games per season in which college coaching staffs butcher the clock management at the end of the game, handing off when they don't need to. But few of those games result in lost fumbles. That's why you never hear about it.

Oregon blew a big lead in that Stanford game. They blew a big lead against Auburn in this year's opener when the Tiger defense steadily clamped down. But notice the commonality: Attaining a big lead. That is another great sign. Comebacks are for suckers. When a team is capable of forging leads like that, especially away from home, good things are going on. On the other hand, a team that makes a string of unlikely late comebacks is almost certainly fraudulent.

The Ducks obviously need to make the most of this season with Herbert. However, the quarterback they landed for 2020 -- Jay Butterfield -- is a big accurate pocket type with ideal touch and quick release. It wasn't a bad consolation prize after desperately pursuing the funny-named kid who eventually picked Clemson.

I don't see the Canes in serious contention for multiple quarterbacks on that level.

1. Our staff and Admin is a joke.
2. Mario has a good staff, has a great class coming in, and will be in the playoff within the next two years.
3. We will still be trying to win the coastal.
4. Our recruiting class will be mediocre, why? Manny is a terrible recruiter.
5. ZacCane call Me to discuss Cheney.

Says who?. They have a Sure fire 1st rd pick QB right now and aint going no where with him. As terrible as a recruiter Manny is...check the current class rankings and get back to me.

Current. Let's talk on signing day, to see where we end up. Herbert has done well considering the injuries to his wr's. It sucks that Breeland is out because thr guy is a stud.

If you switched coaches with Manny at Oregon and Cristobal here, I'm not sure the results are different.

results would be different because the staffs would be different. Mario wouldn’t have a unqualified OC making $1.5 million /yr and HIS boys on staff collecting checks and sucking.

we can talk about Oline all day but I’m sure Mario & mirabel would fix that and we wouldn’t have a app st recruit who wouldn’t be starting at app st RIGHT NOW starting for us. Also Oregon has more offers out for Olinemen than Miami and so does Ala,UGA,Ohio st with Ryan day and Oklahoma. Oregon also has juco offers out for Olinemen and some commits. Miami has neither of those

I'm tired of being the guinea pigs for testing coaching potential, thus no big fan of Mario, but I absolutely agree with your assessment of their awareness of the importance of the O line.

That's the biggest single criticism I have of this staff. They seem to be completely ignoring the most glaring problem on offense.

juco OL and transfer portal guys rarely work out. ivisn and lake went through it on their most recent recruiting pod

FYI -- lotta hindsight here. enos was a hot OC prospect and turned down two big time programs to be here. obviously the results arent good right now bc of stubbornness and OL play, but dont make it seem like you didnt clown UGA and Bama when enos turned them down to take the same job here. foh w that.

mario is as average as they come. lets see how his *** does without a top 5 pick at QB (which he had the last two years and still underwhelms).

herbert is a top 5 pick at QB. he better elevate the guys around him bc thats what elite QBs do.

Was Enos seriously a hot OC prospect?

If he was, that was only because people start thinking you’re a great coach because you serve under Saban.

Oregon spends more money on recruiting than we do.

If the administration decided to stop being greedy ******** & actually put some of that money they're hoarding into the Football program you'd see a drastic increase in Miami's recruiting overall.

And I'm not saying that as a Defense for Manny, because he's not very good recruiter & never really has been. It's more about regardless of who the coach is we will continue to have trouble recruiting at an elite level because we don't spend what is required to be a winning program.

That's the bottom line, but while most people like to talk recruiting "budget"....that is not what is used to pay recruits illicit 6 figure freakin salaries, jobs and cars to attend.

I honestly don't think a Saban could win at the highest level here with the CURRENT desire of the BOT, AD, boosters etc. Quite frankly, if he couldn't get the level of "enthusiasm" he believed he would need to turn it around, he probably wouldn't take the gig anyway.

he had standing offers to be an OC at two top 5 programs. thats about as hot as you can get (BAMA, UGA).

I usually post on canesport but been a member here since 2012. I HAVE and AM NOT a fan of Dan Enos because I know his history. He failed at C. mich as a HC after following in the football steps of 2 guys who has good success there ( Brian Kelly and Butch Jones) he ran before he got fired because the C.mich president didn’t want him so he ran to be ark OC. No HC of a D1 school resigns to be OC of a 2nd tier SEC School. His best year at was his 1st yr when he had a SR QB in Brandon Allen, NFL back in Alex Collins, NFL TE in Hunter Henry and prob most importantly a experienced Oline with some all SEC players and future NFL linemen coached by elite Oline coach and recruiter Sam Pittman. Sam Pittman is a beast and was Butch Davis Oline coach back when Butch was at UNC. When all those guys left including Pittman to UGA the offense and QB, Austin Allen Brandon Allen brother, regressed the next 2 yrs. after Brett was fired Dan got the QB coach at Ala. that is his claim to fame. He did not run ala offense or call plays that was mike locksley who was OC for Illinois under ZOOK and coached some great offenses with juice Williams , Rashard Mendenhall and Arrelious Benn. He never ran a top offense and only claim to fame is that he coached Tua and Jalen. That’s like being hyped about D onofrio coaching Ed Oliver.
I wanted Kendall Briles, or David Yost, or Mike Yurcich or Graham Harrell. When Manny was hired I hated that hire and when he hired Dan Enos I hated that hire too. I knew he was not going to be here long after his staff hires. All I heard was how Alabama and UGA wanted him. Saban was not going to make him OC and Kirby was going to hire him as OC but Kirby was not going to let him bring his boys though. Enos runs a classic Prostyle offense. That fits what Kirby wants but Miami needs a spread offense to take advantage of his athletes not this nonsense that I knew Enos would run. I took a lot of heat but folks on canesport are finally seeing the truth now
