Mario, Chud, And The Laziness Of "Miami Connections"

Butch is the only "Miami guy" that we should consider, and even that has little to do with him being a "Miami guy" and more to do with him being the most elite talent evaluator (both players and coaches) in the business.

If UM isn't going to choose Butch, they need to jump straight to Herman and other fresh faces. ****, Herman is pretty much 1b for me at this point.

I completely agree with this post. Blake has a lot of time to do this right. Hopefully he won't just go after just people who have expressed interest. Shoot for the moon.

Randy Shannon had (before he got the job) a better resume than Mario does now IMO. People continue to say that if you don't know the "area" or the "culture" the coach won't succeed. Randy Shannon grew up in the culture, played in the culture, and coached in the culture. Randy Shannon had 23 years of experience in the Miami area and it did not matter. Go find a coach

Unfortunately, most people at UM making the decisions and the fans and media surrounding the program are really dopey.

USC and Bama used to be caught up in the whole "we need a Trojan/Bear guy" mentality. Those programs suffered for a long time as a result of that antiquated approach. As soon as they broke away from that **** and hired great coaches (Carroll at USC and Saban at Bama), they started winning and competing for NCs again.

Interestingly, USC got itself in a mess again by going back to a version of that "we need a Trojan guy" approach. This time, though, they got caught up in the "let's get a Pete Carroll disciple" to try to recapture the Carroll days. So they hired a couple bums in *****in and Drunkisian.

This Mario, Chud, Stoops "Miami connection" garbage is going to be the final nail in UM's coffin if UM isn't smart enough to break away from it.

I go back and forth between two candidates, Butch and Herman. If Herman had 2-3 years of success as a HC, he would be my hands down favorite.
If Herman had 2 years of success at Houston he'd already be gone. Sometimes, you need to jump off that cliff based on what you've seen of the guy.

Exactly. I'm getting tired of hearing "he's not proven"

He would ******* kill it here and if you can't see that by now, you are beyond clueless and probably think Cristobal is a good candidate.

Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson were both out-of-towners...

Johnson turned out to be a difference maker as a coach while Erickson was very good as a coach.

Productivity is the most important attribute.

Not to be a contrarian but aren't we propping up Butch Davis to try and recapture the Butch Davis days?

I think most people recognize that Butch Davis is an exception to this rule because of his unique ability

So it'd be more akin to USC going after Pete Carroll himself rather than a Carroll disciple. I can see that.

Butch is the only "Miami man" who deserves a place at the table. Chud's last three years have included a 4-12 stint in Cleveland in his only year as a head coach and being a "special assistant" to a currently broken Colts offense. Mario's resume is a joke. Schiano's been out of coaching ever since his Tampa Bay stint because the stink from that is still intact. ****, a select few on social media seem to be vouching for Wannstedt, for f**** sake.

There are two types of Miami fans outright dismissing an obvious stud candidate like Herman. Ones who won't accept anyone but Butch and others who want to say he's unproven. Well, Chud has just one year of head-coaching experience in 20 years (4-12) and is one of the most unexciting retread options imaginable. Herman just skullf***** Wisconsin, Alabama, and Oregon in succession on his way to the national title just last season with a third-string QB who looks so bad without him that he's been benched.

This isn't about South Florida connections. It's not about familiarity with the area. It's about finding someone who can dominate on the sidelines. Then and only then will the blue-chip talent stay home to help bring Miami back. People need to open their eyes.

Crown the OP. I've been arguing with the dopey "we need a Miami guy" types on Twitter the last 2 days. The pro Mario faction is particularly annoying. As others have already noted, you don't get more "Miami" than Randy Shannon. He had one of the top classes in the country. It ultimately meant squat because he couldn't coach on game day and his subsequent classes began to slip. Kids want to play for a winner. Just bring in the right coach and everything else will fall into place.

Has any coach that ever had success here been a "Miami Guy" besides Butch? Jimmy came from Oklahoma state, Erickson from Washington State, Schnelly from the Dolphins.

Historically this thought process makes little sense in the context of Miami. Every guy who has ever succeeded here was far from a "Miami Guy", with the exception of Butch Davis. Just hire the right coach, regardless if he has Miami ties or not.

The stupidity is apparent when someone thinks just because a guy played or coached here successfully he is an automatic good choice for a coaching position. As if 'former Miami' on their resume gives +10 points to 'Competency'.

This aint D&D. Get someone who has experience and knows how to coach.

LMAO at the "Ray Lewis as DC" bull****. We don't need our defensive squad on the sidelines learning how to do the Lewis pre-game strut looking like new-age 'Thriller'.
