Mario shares some very important similarities with Butch. This gives me hope that things will be fine in Coral Gables.
Like Butch, Mario is a poor game day coach. You remember how so bad it was with Butch that we fly a banner at a home game: “ From Champions to Chimps”
Like Butch, Mario will make changes in the best interests of the team. Butch let go coaches that were not up to expectations.
Like Butch, Mario is a great recruiter. See where we are now talent-wise vs when he took over 2 years ago. Butch built the greatest college football team ever. We are competing with the big boys again for recruits under Mario and winning some battles.
Like Butch, Mario is a great talent evaluator. Butch made something worthwhile or great from unranked or lowly ranked recruits. Mario is doing the same.
Like Butch, Mario is a good developer of talent. See how some of the players he inherited from Manny are playing well now and how some lowly ranked players he recruited are performing at a high level.
Like Butch, Mario is a builder of programs. Butch built us up from the lowly probation years to the greatest team in college football. Mario built up Oregon and I believe he will do the same here.
Like Butch, Mario can change the culture of a team. He did it at Oregon and he is doing it here now.
All of the above give me hope. He made a mistake in not taking the V formation in the Black Game. He has owned it. We must all move on, support him and the team. It’s us against the world. We cannot cannibalize ourselves. It’s a Cane thing. Go Canes.
